The Modern Heirloom: Crafting as Legacy in a Fast-Paced World
Liberty’s case for crafting your way through the chaos of the modern world – creating lasting legacies along the way
By: Amy Falconer
Existing today can feel like a constant rush. Monday mornings thrust us back into the daily grind, while weekends are spent careening from one social engagement to the next. And in between? Big screens, medium-sized screens, small screens. In our fast-paced world, slowness has become an elusive privilege, often reserved for annual leave or the occasional Sunday afternoon. Perhaps what we all need is the opportunity to weave mindfulness into our daily rituals: a way to cultivate presence and joy by creating something with our own hands.
Crafting has a long history as both a necessity and a practical means of meeting our needs. We once made our own clothes, mended them, and passed them on to friends and family when they no longer fit. This is how heirlooms are made - and now, Liberty is making a case for returning to the creation of these little legacies.
To Make
If there’s one way to disrupt the monotony of constant instant gratification, it’s making something from scratch. From the first spark of an idea to the final, tangible result, you’re forced to take things one step at a time and engage fully with the process. Whether it’s sewing a simple garment, assembling a quilt, or experimenting with a new creative medium, making invites us to reconnect with the satisfaction of building something piece by piece. It doesn’t have to be perfect - indeed, the beauty often lies in the imperfections, the subtle marks of the maker’s hand. In a world that prioritises speed and convenience, choosing to make something is resistance – transforming raw materials into pieces to bring you, and the ones that come after you, joy. Liberty's downloadable quilt patterns are the perfect place to start, or might we suggest turning to our apparel patterns that take the guesswork out of designing your own garment.

To Mend
In our whirlwind world of constant consumption, the humble hand-me-down has gradually slipped from our wardrobes, regardless of age. We’ve lost the art of prolonging the life of our favourite pieces - of pouring time and care into repairing rather than replacing. Yet there is deep satisfaction in mending a torn seam, replacing a missing button, or patching a well-worn hole.
Recently, visible mending has gained traction as an ecologically minded form of customisation, adding personal flourishes or bold details to already-loved garments. This uptick is reminiscent of Kintsugi in the act: the Japanese practice of repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with gold, treating cracks as part of an object’s history rather than something to disguise - an appreciation for repair not as concealment, but as elevation, where signs of wear are honoured rather than erased.Learning to mend not only prevents waste but can also rekindle our relationship with what we already own. It transforms a seemingly mundane task into a creative exercise, one that requires resourcefulness and imagination in equal spades. Liberty suggests choosing a bright, bold square of fabric to patch up a tear in your beloved pair of jeans, or opting for a clashing spool of thread to sew your buttons on with.

To Personalise
The thrill of seeing your name or initials emblazoned on a gift is a feeling that extends way past childhood – it’s knowing that someone has gone the extra mile to transform their crowd-pleasing gift into a meaningful one. Initials lovingly stitched into a handkerchief or scarf, or a phrase carefully embroidered onto napkins or placemats will bring a touch of thoughtfulness to your gesture that’ll never go unnoticed. What’s more, if your crafting skills are limited, this could be just the thing to dip your toe into the world of making. Liberty suggests picking up a handkerchief from our haberdashery, and delicately sewing on initials, a message or (if you're bold) a larger motif, to add that special touch.

To Gift
Few things capture the spirit of: “it’s the thought that counts”, quite like a handmade gift. Setting aside time to imagine, plan, and carefully execute a project with a loved one in mind is a genuine labour of love. The result needn’t be elaborate - often, the simplest ideas are the most meaningful. Perhaps something fabrics based? Our third floor is a treasure trove of extraordinary fabrics - each one hand designed and printed on the finest bases - so you needn’t look too far for inspiration. However, if anythig requiring a sewing kit is simply not your thing, why not bake your loved one a cake or write them a lovely note on the first page of a beautiful notebook- there are so many ways to make gifting meaningful.
