Cocoon Yourself with the Comforting Skincare Trend

Wrap your complexion in complete cosiness with the newest skincare trend defining routines in 2024

By: Shannon Peter

Are you sitting comfortably? What about your skin? Because in 2024, that’s the ultimate complexion goal: skin that feels comfortable. Relaxed. At peace. Cocooned.

Pleasingly, all it takes to achieve is stripping back to the most basic of skincare routines and honing in on cosseting, cocooning formulas that’ll make your skin the cosiest it’s ever been. In perhaps more scientific terms, it’s about attending to the skin barrier, the important layer of skin that keeps the good stuff (moisture) in and the bad stuff (pollutants, bacteria, etc) out. If the skin barrier is unhappy, you’ll feel it in the form of red, sore, somewhat stingy skin that might flake or flare up at a moment’s notice. If it’s happy, however? It feels completely comfortable. Strong, buoyant, glowing, in fact.

Sounds ideal, doesn’t it? Here’s just a few expert-approved recommendations to help you nail your new year skin goal, pronto…

SOOTHING CLEANSERS

While they might seem like one of the most unassuming of skincare products, there could be potent ingredients lurking inside your cleanser, nibbling away at the skin barrier. Instead, try a balm cleanser fortified with gentle plant oils followed by something creamy and milky, with limited foam (bubble-forming surfactants can often strip skin further).

SOOTHING SERUMS

Where serums are concerned, while you and your skin get some well needed rest, it’s best to avoid anything too harsh, like retinol or skincare acids, best known for their ability to slough away dead skin cells and clear out pores. Instead, focus on putting nourishment back into skin, by way of hydrating, calming ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and ceramides.

SOOTHING MOISTURISERS

Moisturiser is perhaps the most vital step in wrapping your skin in a skincare cocoon. Scrimp here, and you’ll miss out on that protective layer that adds an extra, more superficial barrier and helps lock in moisture. Again, simple formulas will work best; look for rich textures loaded with ceramides and lightweight plant oils.

SOOTHING OILS

You can really take the sting out of aggravated skin by adding an extra layer of oil on top of your moisturiser within your PM routine. While the heavyweight molecules won’t necessarily sink deep into skin, they will penetrate the very top layers and add a glaze of hydration. Squalane and seed oils are just some of the hero ingredients to look out for.

SOOTHING MASKS

There's nothing quite like an evening of pampering yourself with a face mask – they are the ultimate indulgence for your skin. Opt for cream or clay masks if you want to enjoy the ritual of doing your skincare and don't mind a messier application and removal. Or, for a quick fix look to sheet masks – their cloth-like or bio-cellulose material is incredibly absorbent for holding a high concentration of actives, providing an intense action for skin in a short period.
