Snooze Smarter with Our Guide to Making Your Bed

It might not be rocket science, but there is an art to it. Follow along for Liberty's tried-and-tested guide on how to put a duvet cover on like a pro

There’s no greater feeling than getting into a freshly made bed, but tussling with your 10-tog duvet isn’t quite such a sleep-inducing thought. Wrestling to get the duvet evenly distributed within the sheets can often feel like a full-body workout, but it doesn’t have to. If you’re finding yourself bombarded by different methods of how to efficiently put a duvet cover on, we think you’ll be glad to find out there are two rather painless methods to make the ordeal a little easier. Here’s Liberty’s simple guide to making your bed - just in time for laundry day.

Styling a Hotel-Worthy Bed

While dressing the bed with luxury bed linen is key to creating a stylish space, actually making up your bed correctly is crucial to positively reinforce a good night’s sleep for both you and any overnight guests. According to Liberty’s resident Bed Stylist Hannah Edgar, there are a few key tricks to getting that hotel finesse at home:

1.

Using two pillows on each side of the bed is an ideal and traditional way to add height - and a great starting point to embellish with decorative cushions. Tuck the bottom pillow under the duvet to create a cosier bed, ready to dress-down and jump in. Layer with your top pillow and a few cushions, preferably with a patterned fabric or trim for added personality.

Layering contrasting bedspreads or quilts is a fun way to amp up your bedding game (and keep you warm all through winter). Look to Cabana x Liberty for double-print joy or perhaps try your hand at a #LibertyCraftClub and challenge yourself to create your own king-size puff quilt.

2.
3.

A reversible duvet cover is a tried-and-tested Liberty trick to elevate your styled bedscape. They look great subtly folded back for a peak at the underside print, and are perfect if you like to change things up more often than you change your sheets.

How to Put a Duvet Cover On

The Roll Method

Also known as the burrito method, this is TikTok’s current bed-making-method of choice. And we can see why. Follow along below for our step-by-step guide:

  • Take your duvet cover, flip it inside out and then lay down the cover flat, with the opening at the foot of your bed.
  • Lay your duvet on top of the cover, ensuring that all edges and corners neatly match up. This is important, the more aligned you are the easier everything will be.
  • When all matched-up, grab the edge opposite the opening of the duvet cover (the top end) and begin to roll both the duvet and cover together tightly, adjusting as you go to ensure everything stays together.
  • Once you’ve successfully created your burrito, grab one end of the roll and open the duvet cover. Take the opening of the cover and stuff the duvet inside, turning it inside out. You are essentially inverting the duvet cover opening around the ends of the roll.
  • Unroll the duvet carefully, making sure to shake and straighten as you go. You’re done!
  • The Traditional Method

There’s one method that’s stood the test of time, is quicker and a lot less headache-inducing than the rest. No catchy name required. Here’s the traditional method:

  • Start with an inside out duvet cover, and lay your duvet flat on the bed.
  • Lay the cover directly on top of the duvet with the opening at the foot of the bed and ensure that all corners line up neatly.
  • Place your hands inside the duvet cover and grab the top corners. Pinch each corner, both of the cover and and the duvet together, and flip the cover right side out.
  • Keeping hold of the corners, shake the duvet cover down over the duvet insert and adjust as you go.
  • Once the cover is fully over the duvet, ensure all four corners are neatly tucked in and fasten your buttons or ties.
  • Give the duvet a good shake and fluff into place. Night night.
