75 in Residence: Jessica Rose Bird
Where food meets fashion, the award-winning illustrator’s work is now on display at Seventy Five at Liberty
Art has always been at the centre of the Liberty vision; we’ve remained at the forefront of the artistic movement for 150 years now. So once the doors were opened and the tables were laid at our new all-day dining room, Seventy Five at Liberty, it only made sense that we would use this space to spotlight our thriving community of British artists – from the established to the up-and-coming – through an extraordinary series of residencies.
The latest artist to lay claim to our walls is Jessica Rose Bird, a Scottish fashion illustrator and artist, now based in London. Across a series of still life compositions, Bird celebrates the joy of both food and fashion in a collection now available to view and purchase. “For these pieces, I was inspired by the summer menu here at Seventy Five at Liberty – the seasonal fruits and vegetables the chefs use in the dishes, as well as the curation of objects and fashion accessories from Liberty’s shop floor,” she explains.
Having conjured up captivating artworks for the likes of Hermés, Prada, Miu Miu and beyond, Bird is known for her spontaneous and sketchy style, plus her innate knack for capturing the charm of the everyday. And for this exclusive collection, she’s taken the opportunity to experiment with new mediums. “For the first time, I've incorporated collage papers into my work,” she reveals. “And this is my first time working at such a large scale on canvas as well. I’m really excited to continue to play and experiment in this way,” she adds.
As anyone who has explored our neo-Tudor Halls can attest, Bird wasn’t short on inspiration. As well as the seasonal fare served up in our restaurant, Bird was inspired by the curated edit of fashion, accessories and homeware found across our floors, whether it’s a bulb of ruby red beetroot sidled up alongside a luxury fragrance, or a billowing courgette flower leaning against a cult bag. “I did lots of window shopping,” she admits. “There was just so much to choose from, I could have made a thousand artworks.”
“I was really drawn to Jonathan Adler, and the sculptural element of his pieces,” she explains. “Fashion-wise, I enjoyed drawing the Ganni footwear and bags, as well as items from Vivienne Westwood, Anya Hindmarch and LOEWE.”
Jessica Rose Bird’s work is on show and available to purchase from Seventy Five at Liberty until 16 June 2025.
