The Art of Colour: Modern Makeup Defined

Liberty presents the game-changing brands, formulation innovations and colour combinations defining modern makeup.

By: Harriet Brown

A wash of colour, a pop of pigment, hint of luminous sheen or the vibrant splash of a red lip: in the world of beauty, the complexion becomes an expressive canvas – a palette of possibilities.

To explore, Liberty invited makeup artist and artistic director Erin Green to share her interpretation of beauty’s contemporary mood, acting as Liberty’s artist in residence for a campaign starring the finest makeup brands in the Beauty Hall. In Erin’s expressive, intuitive world, she set about capturing the essence of beauty artistry, to explore the tones, shades, shimmers and pops that define what makeup means for the modern beauty afficionado.

“It was about finding a way to make colour feel wearable, approachable, and something people could actually see themselves doing,” she explains. “As Liberty’s artist in residence, I had to look at the bigger picture: not just the face, but the Liberty customer, the individual brands, the overall image and my own taste.”

Drawing inspiration from artists and photographers including Nan Goldin and Thomas Ruff, with nods to Japanese colour theory – Green creates an exploration of texture and colour on the skin.

“Liberty gave me the space to create my own vision, which is quite rare,” says Erin. “It became about balancing impact with wearability – how colour can exist in a real, everyday context.”

Working with a selection of the finest Beauty Hall brands, each product, pigment and finish speaks to a mood of possibility, self-expression and celebration: a creative elegance destined to influence your own makeup musings.

ILIA

Eye Stylus Shadow Stick in Filigree Metallic | Overglaze Lip Gloss in Figure

Art-inspired—no artistry required. With shades drawn from Renaissance oil paintings, ILIA’s Eye Stylus Shadow Sticks are innovative, effortless, and versatile.

The stylus was created to make eye makeup easy with a vast array of potential uses: be it an all over colour wash, a defined and precise eyeliner, a smart highlighter for the inner corners of the eye, or a graphic colour pop – as seen in Erin Green's use as a liner in The Art of Colour – it’s a product destined to perform.

“These shadows just last,” says ILIA founder Sasha Plavsic. “Creams always crease on me - I have hooded lids – and the Eye Stylus stays flexible and comfortable on my skin.” The proof is in the wearing: 100% of those asked in ILIA’s clinical trials said the formula doesn’t budge or smudge after 12 hours. What’s more, as with all ILIA’s creations, the Eye Stylus features ingredients designed to support skin, including upcycled grape extract, an antioxidant that helps to visibly reduce fine lines.

VIOLETTE_FR

Plume Lip in Châtaigne Grillée | Plume Eyeshadow in Pluie Violette

Rooted in Violette_FR’s signature sense of artistry, Plume Lip Feather Matte Lip Whip and Plume Eyeshadow Feather Matte Veil + Feather Shimmer Veil honour the art of the in between. With playful washes of colour that lie somewhere between natural and bold, each embodies the brand’s innate understanding of how we want to wear makeup in the modern world – and captures makeup artist Erin Green’s mood of boldness meets wearability.

Founder Violette Serrat further describes the Plume collection – meaning ‘feather’ in her native French – as an exploration of contrasts: “It was something light as a single feather – soft and airy, yet with the strength of powerful wings – colour rich with depth. […] This formula is such a paradox: it’s bold and tender at once. It gives you a strong colour payoff but the feeling and application are totally instinctive. It’s makeup that embraces imperfection. It invites you to play.”

In Plume Lip’s feather-matte finish – destined to last for 12 hours – the focus is on ease: mirrorless application, effortless finish and comforted, cushioned lips. Meanwhile, the brand-new Plume Eyeshadow - which appears in eight shades, four shimmer and four matte - is a cream-to-powder formula that creates a soft, diffused veil of colour that achieves that much-coveted “lived-in” look in seconds. Violette’s tip? Apply to the lid with your ring finger for a whisper of colour, and layer up until you achieve your desired finish.

WESTMAN ATELIER

Baby Cheeks Blush Stick in Minette | Sun Tone Bronzing Crème in Soleil Parfait 1

The best makeup creations are those so smartly simple, they instantly revolutionise your routine: and thanks to founder Gucci Westman’s decades of artistry: Westman Atelier is the master of just that.

In its dual toned Sun Tone Bronzing Crème, the simplest of colour concepts brings depth and nuance to the finish: one light shade, one darker, in combination the perfect recipe for dimension and polish. Combine this with smart ingredients such as coconut-derived emollients for weightless application and avocado extract to reinforce the skin barrier and this seemingly simple palette is a skin wonder waiting to happen.

As Hollywood’s resident makeup guru, Westman’s application tips are worth noting, and when it comes to the new Sun Tone Bronzing Crème, "it’s easier than you think,” she says. “Lighter on the high points, deeper on the edges. Together, they create that sun-kissed dimension you can't get from a single shade."

As for the brand’s signature Baby Cheeks Blush Sticks, Gucci recommends “[working] in a small oval motion blending up and outward as you go. For cheeks: Apply the stick directly to skin or dab onto Westman Atelier Baby Blender Brush or fingers. Gently blend onto the middle of your cheekbone. For Lips: Pop onto lips for a monochromatic look and juicy pop of colour.”

LISA ELDRIDGE BEAUTY

Velatura Balm in Hellebore Heaven | Rouge Experience Refillable Lipstick in Ribbon

Legendary makeup artist Lisa Eldridge has a knack for curating colour for every beauty occasion. Be it a soft flush for everyday, or a bold lip shade to match a momentous occasion: Lisa Eldridge has it mastered.

Often considered as the makeup artist’s makeup artist – it only takes one sweep of her products to understand why. The Art of Colour makeup artist Erin Green describes the products as “foolproof”. “You can just put them on and blend them out with your fingers,” she says. “They’re really wearable but still have impact.”

Each, precisely formulated, creation embodies a love of colour and of truly extraordinary makeup. In founder Lisa Eldgridge’s words, the new Velatura balm is: “intuitive and alive with dewy light”, crafted to create a dewy, contemporary finish. “Fresh, modern and effortless, this is your answer to fuss free makeup, and lets the beauty of your natural skin shine through,” she notes.

With it’s modern flush, the balm continues Lisa Eldridge Beauty's renowned line in bringing beauty classics into the future. No product exemplifies this more than the signature Rouge Experience Refillable Lipstick: a lightweight cream formula with a soft, subtly luminous sheen, evocative of old Hollywood glamour. “Whilst the Rouge Experience Refillable Lipstick honours the past and the incredible pieces it was inspired by, there’s nothing vintage about this futuristic design,” Lisa tells Liberty.

BEAUTY PIE

A brand-new entrant to the Liberty Beauty Hall: Beauty Pie is here to make an impact. Take the Wondercolour Longwear Cream Eyeshadow Stick, for example, used by Erin Green as a soft sheen of highlight around the eyes, in the shades Tea Rose and Earthed. With vibrant colours, water-resistant and crease-free formulas, ease is embedded in every stroke, but it’s the blendable, glide-on versatility that truly shines: meaning this one simple seeming product is an all-in-one eye solution. Whether you’re blending it across the eye with a fluffy brush a full coverage effect or using on the upper and lower lash lines as an avant garde colour pop.

For Erin, ease was key. “Everything we used could be applied with a brush or just your hands,” she says. “It was all about making colour easy and intuitive, but still effective. With eyeshadow sticks, you can smudge them under the eye, blend with your finger, build them up or soften them down.”

Alongside the Eyeshadow Stick, Erin used the newly launched Wondercolour Glossy Peptide Lip Butter. Combining the high-shine finish of a gloss with the nourishment of an oil, this buttery formula was created by a specialist lab in Korea, and delivers on subtly impactful colour and high-tech innovation in equal measure. Used by Erin in the shade Cabernet, the softly pigmented, slick formula creates the ultimate modern gloss finish. Beyond the gloss, ingredients including hyaluronic acid and macadamia oil ensure the formula supports lip hydration levels and protects the skin barrier – meaning healthier looking (and feeling) lips in the long run.

JONES ROAD

Miracle Balm in Flushed Emporium | Eyeshadow Stick in Smokey Grey

Natural and fuss free doesn’t mean low impact, and Jones Road’s scintillating array of easy to use, easy to wear and always effective makeup is the perfect example.

To capture the Jones Road mantra, makeup an creative artist, Erin Green, used a flush of Miracle Balm across the cheeks in an intuitive application mirroring a natural blush – blending with hands and fingers for a seamless skin finish, finally a subtle depth was added to the eyes using the Eyeshadow Stick’s creamy, blendable formula.

Each piece in the Jones Road collection was created based on the idea that every product should be a hero product, and uses founder Bobbi Brown’s decades of experience as a makeup artist as inspiration.

In Miracle Balm, Jones Road designed the ultimate multitasker: used by Erin Green across the cheeks, different shades would also work across eyes, highlight, lip, bronze and more The pro tip: use your fingertips to break the seal on the balm’s surface, then rub your fingers together to warm the balm slightly before applying to skin wherever you desire. Easy as that.
