The Fragrance Hall of Fame

Meet the scents so transformative, so innovative that they have to be spritzed to be believed.

By: Harriet Brown

Home to the masters of scent, Liberty has long been the chosen destination of those in search of new, rather extraordinary signatures. This summer, join us as we pay homage to these works of fragrance art, perfume wonders that will take your breath away with their innovative, transformative and enchanting aromas.

Creed Aventus Eau de Parfum

The Artefact

Heritage and prestige: captured in a scent. Smokey birch, decadent cedarwood and vibrant bergamot and pineapple make for a tantalising concoction that’s revered across the globe.

The History

Originally created in honour the perfume house’s 250th anniversary, Aventus encapsulates seven generations of regal connections and refinement. Based in London’s Mayfair, Creed’s history is as rich and captivating as its signature scents.

The Innovation

In each drop of Aventus, Creed employs the art of Millésime. Meaning “the best of the crop” the term traditionally refers to wine making, but has been adopted by Creed to bring an additional purity and refinement to each and every ingredient in the bottle, with only the very highest qualities used.

The Star Quality

Not simply an olfactive ode to strength and success, each element of Aventus is designed to reflect its powerful associations. One detail that shines: Creed’s distinctive shaped bottle, designed to evoke a classic gentleman’s hip flask.

Byredo Heliotropia Eau de Parfum

The Artefact

Exclusive to Liberty, and directly inspired by the euphoric experience of exploring our hallowed halls, Heliotropia is a heady and dreamlike ode to all things Liberty.

The History

Ben Gorham’s Byredo has captured a niche in the scent world since its beginning in 2006, fusing the minimalism of Scandinavian design with Gorham’s own Indian and Canadian heritage to craft scents designed to evoke deep emotion.

The Innovation

“The opening of the fragrance evokes a clear image of the traditional Liberty floral patterns, and the mid notes are quirky and meant to represent the personal and curated approach that Liberty have,” says Gorham. “The base notes – of agar wood and white birch – are an interpretation of the massive wood structure that the building still carries.”

The Star Quality

Could there be an experience more unique, than spritzing a scent in the space that inspired it? Head to the Beauty Hall to experience for yourself.

Liberty LBTY. Fragrance Zephirine Eau de Parfum

The Artefact

A jewel in the Liberty LBTY. Fragrance collection, Zephirine captures the essence of Liberty’s creative legacy in a scent beloved for its rich amber notes and abundant explorative nature.

The History

A voyage of discovery in olfactive form, Liberty LBTY. Fragrances take their inspiration from the archival prints and rich heritage that runs through Liberty’s halls.

The Innovation

Master perfumer Frank Voelkl crafted the scent based on the ‘Eden’s Awakening’ print, designed in 1889. “Looking at the print from the archives of Liberty takes you on a journey through this lush fantasy garden, so I wanted my fragrance to take you on that same journey,” he explains.

The Star Quality

Zephirine’s spicy sweetness comes from the extract of Rose Centifolia, known as ‘the queen of flowers’ due to its small yield and majestic scent. Embodying masculine and feminine qualities, this regal rose makes a versatile, genderless fragrance.

Vyrao Free 00 Eau de Parfum

The Artefact

To founder Yasmin Sewell, each Vyrao scent is more than simply fragrance: it’s a tool for transformation. With it’s soothing florals and sensual vanilla, Free 00 is primed to deliver a liberating, uplifting experience.

The History

Using scent, colour, natural ingredients and crystals, Vyrao’s scents are crafted to shift your mood. Yasmin Sewell describes Free 00 as: “A light mix of mandarin and orange flower with jasmine and vanilla, grounded in sandalwood. It gives me a zap of happiness every time I wear it.”

The Innovation

Scents spark feeling: and Vyrao is tapping into this using pioneering “neuroscents”, which have been shown to impact feelings such as mindfulness, joy, groundedness and self-confidence.

The Star Quality

Look closely, and you’ll spy a small sparkling crystal within: a Herkimer diamond crystal alleged to offer feelings of clarity and spiritual connection: impressive stuff for a scent!

Bibbi Vanilla Factory Eau de Parfum

The Artefact

This is not your average vanilla fragrance. Delectably sweet and smooth, yes, but something mysterious and seductive lurks in this scent’s depth: with smoky woods and rich pachouli.

The History

Bibbi Parfum is the brainchild of Swedish-born creative designer, Stina Bibbi Seger, alongside her husband, Jan Vilhelm Ahlgren – yes, the very genius that brought us Vilhelm Parfumerie. Quite the fragrance power couple.

The Innovation

In Seger’s own words, Bibbi is: “A mind-shifting, contemporary haute parfumerie collection inspired by unique narratives and stories which I experience during meditation – a subconscious journey in blue.”

The Star Quality

Think of this as a double-take scent. At first, there’s the charm of the vanilla, but its the hypnotic, mysterious base notes that will keep you coming back for more.

Ex Nihilo Blue Talisman Eau de Parfum

The Artefact

Ex Nihilo co-founder Benoît Verdier calls Blue Talisman “our iconic, crazy creation”. And he’s not wrong. Hypnotic and abstract it is a musky, fresh blend of ginger, amber notes and citrus.

The History

Not your average fragrance brand, Ex Nihilo blends the expertise of three industry veterans: Benoît Verdier, Sylvie Loday and Olivier Royère; each aiming to disrupt the scent status quo

The Innovation

“We give our perfumers to be creative: there are no limits for them. We only work with the best materials we can find,” says Verdier. “We are also very inspired by the French Avant-Garde and push the boundaries of creation and creativity.”

The Star Quality

“At Ex Nihilo, we love to be addictive at first smell,” says Verdier, noting that, for Blue Talisman, this is down to one particular ingredient. “[Blue Talisman] contains Ambrofix, a low-profile ingredient [with a potent, amber note], and its impact is amazing.”

The Perfumer’s Story by Azzi Sequoia Wood

The Artefact

Picture yourself in a lush, Californian forest: surrounded by towering sequoia and cedars, with delicate florals rambling around your footsteps: that’s the feeling you’ll get from Sequoia Wood.

The History

Azzi Glasser, the nose behind The Perfumer’s Story, is an industry trailblazer. She launched her own brand in 2016, having previously pioneered the idea of scenting spaces, working with the likes of Somerset House, the Victoria & Albert museum, and the Royal Academy.

The Innovation

Glasser considers herself a conceptual perfumer – translating themes into scent storytelling. Winning numerous accolades and industry awards, we’re certainly enamoured by her olfactive imaginings.

The Star Quality

As Glasser’s own signature scent, she describes Sequoia Wood as “expressing creativity with individuality”. More than that, it conjures a unique sultry spin on sensual scents: grown-up, sophisticated but with a hint of je-ne-sais-quoi allure.

La Pyae Catch Me If I Fall Eau de Parfum

The Artefact

It’s not often that a fragrance newcomer bursts onto the scene with such captivating impact: but the debut scent from La Pyae is a thrilling olfactive premiere.

The History

Kathleen Baird-Murray spent 30 years as a journalist before turning her hand to perfumery, securing the nose of master perfumer Frank Voelkl to craft a scent inspired by her Myanmar heritage.

The Innovation

Creamy jasmine, ambrette and freesia, sparkling bergamot and comforting musk make this scent both nostalgic and comforting; an ode to loved ones near or far.

The Star Quality

Running through the notes of Catch Me If I Fall is Baird-Murray’s connection with, and passion for, Myanmar. When developing the scent, she shared her personal trove of memories with Voelkl, from a sandalwood necklace to her personal photo album.
