Co-founders Maickel Weyers and Marieke Meulendijks share the stories behind their favourite Róhe creations

By: Harriet Brown

Amsterdam-based Róhe is rapidly gathering a reputation as the new name to know, and to covet, in modern minimal fashion.

Founded in 2021 by Maickel Weyers and Marieke Meulendijks, the house describes itself as emanating a quiet confidence, crafting timeless pieces for the modern wardrobe – traditional, but with a twist.

As the brand settles into Liberty’s First Floor, co-founders Maickel and Marieke shared their selection of some of the key pieces in the collection, and with them, the story of the brand.

The Story of Róhe

Marieke Meulendijks

"Róhe focuses on the unexpected edge, de-constructed elements, exceptional Italian fabrics and uncompromising quality.

My favourite piece, the belted trench coat with double collar is a great example of how our Atelier contributes to the tradition of classic tailoring and at the same time experiments with these time-honoured techniques.

The brand stands for an infinite dialogue of quiet confidence. A strong identity for a timeless reinvented garderobe. A multi-disciplinary philosophy, where craft, innovation and an artistic community meet. A personal garderobe that can transcend seasons with each piece seamlessly complementing the existing collection.

My approach to building a wardrobe is the feel of empowerment. I’m a more of a shy person, so for me it's important that clothes give me a sense of calm empowerment. The nice draped double collar on the trench coat gives me strong feeling without being too loud and this, for me, is an important sense I want to share with other women and men.

Our international team works to perfect the construction and fit of the garments through research, draping, innovation, and in-house patternmaking.

For the belted trench coat, we de-constructed a vintage trench coat and then put it back together and this is how the detachable double collar trench coat came to life. All our classics are defined by a rewritten definition of tailoring and elevated minimalism.

It would be nice to wear the trench coat on top of the black boatneck shaped waistcoat and our wide leg wool off white trousers on the way to a nice dinner party. With this special trench coat you make a great entrance and the waistcoat top gives a great occasion vibe at the dining table. The off white tailored trousers give a cool fresh pop to the look!"

Maickel Weyers

"My favourite piece is the ribbed wool knitted cardigan. The cardigan is made by Ley Tricot, our Italian knitwear manufacturer, a family we’ve been in close contact with from the beginning. A very special partner with whom we have grown a lot over the years, who’s very committed and has lots of love and passion for knitwear. The expertise and craftsmanship of this family business is visible in every piece of the collection, and contributes to the longevity of Róhe’s timeless and modern garments. For me “craftmanship” is key in building collections.

When going to the office, I like the versatile layering feel of a cardigan. Worn on top of a fresh white Róhe t-shirt, styled on a denim or a tailored trousers, for a more dressed look. A cardigan is also nice to wear on the bike on the way home, instead of wearing a jacket.

My favourite piece in terms of quality is the double-face wool-jacket, the jacket is made from a special wool quality which allows a splitable, seamless finishing done by hand. Also here craftmanship skills are required and that makes this garment very special. The materials we choose have a major impact on the quality and thus the lifespan of the clothing, which we highly value."
