Caroline Hirons Launches Skin Rocks In Liberty

Find out everything you need to know about the former Liberty shop floor consultant and skincare expert’s brand

By: Helen Culley

For the uninitiated, Caroline Hirons is one of the country's most trusted and influential beauty bloggers, with over 100 million views on her videos and 139 million hits to her blog. She’s also an award-winning aesthetician, best-selling author, and one-time Liberty shop floor consultant. Caroline is also the founder and CEO of her own skincare line, Skin Rocks.

Her no-nonsense approach and decades-long expertise mean that the brand is focused on healthy skin that looks naturally good, rather than focused on chasing unrealistic beauty ideals. It comes with a healthy dose of honesty, too: “If you don't need it, don't spend the money if your skin isn't going to benefit from it.”

The Brand Ethos

“We're not selling hope in a jar,” says Caroline. “We're very real about what the product does. We back the product’s purpose, so everything is clinically trialled and really, we just speak straight to consumers and then let them make the decision for themselves. We literally say on the packaging ‘you need this if X, and you don't need this if Y’. We tell people not to buy it if they don't have a particular need for it, which no one else does.”

The brand’s approach to explaining the purpose and benefits of a product is strictly jargon-free. Plus, the almost 150k-strong members of Caroline’s Skincare Freaks Facebook group have high expectations. By now, she is trusted by them implicitly to be honest and transparent about her recommendations, her Skin Rocks brand, and her practices.

“We are cruelty-free, we do not test on animals, and we never will. All power to brands if they want to put that on their packaging labels, but I don't need to because I have the relationship with my customers that they trust me. You know if I say it’s not tested on animals that it's not. We have the transparency.”

Caroline's Rules for Good Skin

The earlier you prioritise skincare, the less work there is to do in the long term.  Start with the basics.

A healthy cleansing routine is a must, as is always having a lip balm in your bag or beside the bed. Caroline doesn’t prescribe to following a lengthy 12-step program each day, but finding what works for you. The Skin Rocks routine always starts with a thorough cleanse. The Cream Cleanser is for all skin types and contains 8 amino acids, squalane and jojoba seed oil to condition and support the skin’s barrier. This is followed by either The Gentle Acid or The Control Acid, part of the brand’s new Tone range.

For those who suffer from breakouts, congestion and dull or hormonal skin, the Control Acid is the right pick for you and can be used preventatively. The Gentle Acid Toner is exfoliating and better for those wanting to target dullness, skin texture and pigmentation, having been formulated with AHA to address hyper-pigmentation and minimising visible pores. These should be used anywhere between daily and three times per week depending on your skin, but avoid using them at the same time as a retinoid or any other strong actives. It’s important to always follow up with a SPF after you moisturise.

If you do, however, want to delve into retinoids, you can alternate between the two, using acids on one day and retinoids the next. A good starter product to introduce these into your routine if you’ve never used them before is Retinoid 1, followed by moisturiser – Caroline loves The Moisturiser Fragrance Free as a year-round staple. For those on the lookout for a new SPF to introduce into their routine, we have good news – Caroline is currently working on an SPF, which will launch sometime in the future.

A Last Word of Advice

Her advice for future entrepreneurs? Be tough and prepared to work. “It's hard work, but you know, it's not worth doing if it is not hard work, right? It would have been easy to just keep blogging, having opinions about everyone else's product. It was about time to put myself on my own turf.”
