To the untrained nose, the secrets of perfume creation can seem like pure alchemy: labyrinthine trails of scent that miraculously harmonise with just one spritz. There’s magic in the mystery, but even more delight in decoding the details. Let Liberty be your guide as we dive deep into the olfactory foundations behind one of our most exhilarating scents.

When world renowned perfumier Pierre Negrin began the task of translating our Merchant print into perfume, for LBTY. Fragrance’s artisan scent, Tudor (£225 for 100ml) , he also set out to capture the essence of Liberty’s iconic home on London’s Regent Street.

With its instantly recognisable timber exterior and dramatic internal design, the Liberty flagship, also affectionately referred to as “Tudor”, provided the perfect muse for Negrin’s architectural approach to fragrance: bottling a building, if you will. If your fragrance vocabulary is in need of a refresh, don’t panic: the basics are simple. If a perfume is an orchestra, then the “notes” are the instruments: you hear (or smell) different ones at different times, in a carefully crafted scent symphony.

Alternatively, like Negrin, think of a perfume like a building: the base notes are the solid, dependable foundations, the heart notes sit at the core of a scent, and the top notes act as a peak, or “roof” that rounds everything off.

With that in mind, it’s time to take a sensory tour…

“This fragrance was inspired by Liberty’s iconic building which has soft architectural details and blooms around its concrete and wooden details.” - perfumer Pierre Negrin.

The Foundation

Bohemian and woody, the base notes, or foundations, of Tudor are grounded in the solid richness of sandalwood, iris and amber: ingredients that Negrin selected to reflect the ornamental, yet resilient, timber structure and shape of the store.

“The shape of the building itself was a strong inspiration for me,” he explains. “The woods are what are really supporting this building, and this perfume.”

There’s a hint of softness amidst the deeper woody notes, making for a minimalist, yet complex palette that nods to the secrets, stories and hidden gems of Liberty.

The Heart

Continuing with Tudor’s woody, bohemian feel – the heart notes of Tudor include the green and smoky tones of cypress, alongside herbal camomile and musky wild cistus (a delicate Mediterranean flower).

The impact? A heart that encapsulates the diversity and history of a store like no other, with an unfussy elegance and creativity. According to Negrin: “This fragrance is for a person that is drawn to minimalism in an elegant way – who values quality and craftsmanship that is rooted in heart and creativity”.

The Flourish

At first introduction, there’s a delightfully unexpected freshness to Tudor’s palette. “First, you smell ginger,” explains Negrin. “[The ginger] is pointing like an arrow. To me, this represents the point of the fragrance and the high point of the building.”

The vivid notes of crushed juniper, grated ginger and spicy nutmeg sit atop the deep, woody base and heart notes for a vibrant first impression, warming into earthy tones as it settles on the skin. Much like Liberty itself this intricate tapestry of notes is artistic, elegant and totally original.
