Summer Styling: The Trends to Wear Now

What to wear for the heady days of high summer

By: Georgia Graham

The ‘Dog Days’ of summer refers to the period where the season is at its zenith: those steamy days that fall between June and early September, where we all lounge around like dogs in the heat. It can feel like summer will last forever, in all its hot, languid glory. But sadly, that’s not the case. Whether you’re making the most of the summer days, or preparing yourself mentally (and sartorially) for a long-awaited break - these are the trends that will take you there.

A Floral Flourish

Unfurling blooms are a perennial sign of the new season. From the puffed blossoms of early spring to the full-throttle floral symphonies of June and July: where better to take inspiration for your summer aesthetic? If an all over print feels intimidating, opt for textural detailing for a soft effect: whether that's a naturally rugged base fabric of hemp or linen, or through delicate embroidery. Pair your floral shirt with shorts, fisherman sandals and a vintage camera slung over your shoulder.

Form and Function

Summer is a season characterised by ease. It brings out the effortless side in all of us, stripping us back to a more fuss-free, relaxed version of ourselves. Although we can’t make the weather last, we can harness this attitude in easygoing pieces that are both practical and stylish. Start with some roomy chinos and a crisp white tee. Add a utilitarian blazer or shirt for evening, or a vintage-inspired sweatshirt for a retro touch (see above).

Elegance is Best

It’s hard to tout tailoring as a trend - our neighbours on Savile Row have been at it since the 1800s. But this season welcomes a return to a softer, more sensual point of view, with elegant pieces from the likes of Kartik Research, Paul Smith and Belgian icon Dries Van Noten. Add a delicately printed pocket square for an artistic touch. Alternatively, Issey Miyake’s signature pleats are a modern classic - light and breezy, but smart enough for a formal event.

In the Loop

Another trend to help you keep the summer spirit alive (even if the weather won't play ball) is this season’s knitwear, whose bright colours will elongate your sunny state of mind. Colour blocking and tactile textures keep things cheerful. This vibrant chartreuse option from the Brooklyn based Adsum, is bold enough to bring a hint of warmth to even the dullest of days.
