The Story Behind Five Vintage Jewellery Gems
With gemmologist Freddie Feely
Edwardian, Diamond Three Stone Ring, 3.90cts.
"This exquisite Edwardian three-stone diamond ring embodies the grace of early 20th-century jewellery design. The Edwardian era (circa 1901–1915) marked a golden age of platinum craftsmanship, when jewellers first started exploring delicate, lacy designs that could only be made in platinum.
The craftsmanship reveals the influence of a master jeweller from the Edwardian period. The ring features three, prominent Old European Cut diamonds, bezel set in the ring. Old European cuts are predecessors to the modern round brilliant cut, and are currently highly sought after for their uniqueness, as they were all cut by hand. To me, this ring represents the enduring allure of antique craftsmanship."
Noah's Ark Bangle
“A vintage “Animals of the Ark” bangle by James Avery that captures both artistry and storytelling in gold. The motif of paired creatures, lions, elephants, camels etc circling the bangle tell the story of Noah's Ark in continuous relief.
James Avery established his jewellery company in 1950s Texas, and is celebrated for his handmade, artistic creations. The bangle is a wearable story, one that transforms a biblical scene into a continuous, tactile sculpture. Beyond its narrative beauty, it embodies the mid-century American craft movement, when small studios championed authenticity over mass production.”
Yellow and White Diamond Earrings
“Set with an array of pear, oval, trilliant, radiant, cushion, and round-cut yellow diamonds, these earrings are a testament to modern craftsmanship. Each stone is individually set in yellow gold and framed by ribbons of white diamonds, creating contrast and an array of different sparkles when worn.
The use of mixed cut yellow diamonds points toward a jeweller who valued both individuality and technical artistry. The beauty of these earrings lies in the contrast of colours and shapes, used to great effect.”
Emerald & Diamond Ballerina Ring
“The “ballerina” ring emerged in the mid-20th century, named for the graceful swirl of a dancer’s tutu. These rings have a distinctive arrangement of tapered baguette diamonds radiating from a central gemstone, capturing the movement of the classic costume.
The heart of this ring is a deep, luminous emerald, set in yellow gold, and surrounded by the tapered diamond 'tutu'. A great cocktail piece, the baguette cut diamonds catch the light from every angle.”
Victorian Axe Bracelet
“This bracelet dates to the late 1850s, during the height of the Victorian era, a period celebrated for its elaborate symbolism and devotion to intricate goldsmithing. Jewellery from this time often carried hidden meanings and motifs. The axe in this bracelet symbolises strength and protection.
The bracelet is crafted in 18ct gold with intricately engraved textured links and a solid gold axe hanging from the end. The piece is solid, with an incredible heft, and each link is dated 1858–59 (by hallmark).
The bracelet’s texture is what makes it extraordinary, every surface catches the light giving the gold a living quality. The gold axe charm adds a unique sculptural element, turning a piece of fine jewellery into a statement of character and story. This piece is handmade, and an incredible example of the period.”
