Liberty Letters: When Liberty Met Pentagram

Introducing a new series of fabrics designed in collaboration with multi-disciplinary graphic design studio, Pentagram

By: Charlotte Olby

What do you get when two very different design houses collide? Well, when Liberty met graphic design studio Pentagram it resulted in a vibrant fusion of fashion and fonts, or in other words, our latest collection of fabrics and fashion accessories: Liberty Letters.

The team at Pentagram were called upon to merge the worlds of graphics and textiles, based on their take on a new Liberty typeface and logo. With their sights set on developing our signature font into graphic prints, the collaboration led to a series of playful and unexpected typographic patterns which perfectly captured the spirit of Liberty. Our in-house fabric designers then played with these patterns and incorporated words evocative of Liberty, then rescaled, recoloured and reimagined the designs to build a new type of textile print for Liberty.

Watch the Liberty alphabet dance in an explosion of geometric patterns, with letters that appear to grow and shrink across fabric in multi-colour and monochrome, vertical and horizontal, distorted and stretched optical illusions. This is a celebration of typography, delivered to you in ten bold and contemporary fabric designs and an exclusive collection of accessories. In fact, it’s certainly something to write home about.

Introducing the Liberty Letters Collection

This design explores shapes created by letter forms, abstracting, and overlapping the layers digitally to create a large-scale contrasting design.
Horizontal and vertical stripes are created using a repeat of ‘Liberty’. This design makes a bold colour statement in a multicolour colourway and two tonal shades.
Letters drift in and out of a checkerboard background, creating semi-circular patterns, perfectly illustrating the nature of the word dreamer.
A check is created in this design, formed by individual blocks containing letters, stacked to form the word ‘yes’.
A stripe created from rows of alternately slanting letters. This design was created digitally by distorting the word to create an unusual graphic grid, shrinking and growing across the fabric.
A smaller scale interpretation of Gingham Hope, this design has smaller squares of letters to create a small-scale check.
The pattern in this geometric design is a cross between an arrow and checkerboard, inspired by the interesting shapes created by stacking letters.
The letters of the alphabet have been distorted horizontally and stacked vertically to create an interesting stripe full of unusual pattern.
A complex check is formed from vertical and horizontal letters spelling out the word imagine, the letters grow in size creating a sort of optical illusion.
A large-scale check is created from carefully coloured blocks of letters, stacked to create the illusion of a woven gingham fabric.
