How to Repair Damaged Hair Post-Holiday

Fun in the sun can be less fun for your locks. Here’s how to give your hair some necessary TLC after the summer months are over

By: Georgia Graham

There’s something paradoxical about summer. On the one hand, it’s a deeply restorative season, where long, languid days and warm nights help us adopt a relaxed attitude to life. On the other hand, the heat of the summer months can inspire a special kind of hedonism - we stay out too late, sizzle in the sun and discard our usual routine in favour of being spontaneous and carefree.

Whilst our parasympathetic nervous system might benefit from becoming the summer version of ourselves, our hair can end up feeling fried from all the adventures. Luckily the Liberty Beauty Hall is packed with products that are ready to rescue your post-summer hair, and restore it to its healthy and hydrated former self.

Defend Against the Elements

The best way to care for your hair on holiday is to mitigate your chances of damage in the first place - that’s where a swim cap comes in. Whilst images of school swimming lessons or a 1950s-style chinstrap might spring to mind, Philip Kingsley has created an invisible alternative: the Swimcap Water Resistant Hair Mask. The formula was designed especially for the first US Olympic synchronised swimming team, and promises to lock in moisture, protect against UV, sun damage, sea salt and chlorine, and boost shine. Slather onto damp hair before a day in the sun and leave in for best results.

Another choice for those thinking ahead is Oribe’s Gold Lust Nourishing Oil. It’s designed to strengthen hair strands so they can withstand UV rays, pollutants and thermal styling (ie. battling humidity-induced frizz with a straightening iron). A lightweight oil with heavy duty protection, ingredients like shea butter and argan oil prevent the deterioration of the hair’s natural keratin. Apply to dry hair before sun exposure for additional protection.

Go Back to Basics

The humble shampoo is easily overlooked - but the right wash will set you up for success on your hair repair journey. Rinse away any buildup of chlorine, chemicals and seawater with OUAI’s Detox Shampoo, a concentrated formula made with apple cider vinegar. Suitable for coloured or keratin treated hair, use this to get rid of any excess chemicals or dirt before you apply further treatments. It also smells divine, with its notes of rose, bergamot and lychee.

Swap in a Rich Conditioner

Next up, conditioner. Slather your hair in Charlotte Mensah's unctuous formula for a thick coating of moisture-boosting bliss. For maximum impact, towel off excess water, then apply a generous amount from roots to ends - rinse after five minutes. Packed with healing natural ingredients including manketti nut and ximenia oils, this conditioner will leave your hair feeling even softer and silkier than before you went away.

Try a Mask

As with all the best beauty rituals, performing a hair mask is a functional act which doubles as an opportunity for self care. There’s something very peaceful about dolloping a fragrant mask onto your hair and pottering around the house, luxuriating in the time it takes to soak in. A favourite from the Liberty Beauty Hall is Maria Nila of Stockholm. Try their True Soft Masque (containing those familiar post-holiday saviours Shea butter and Argan oil) or the Structure Repair Hair Masque for heavy duty restoration. Here's an idea: why not unpack your suitcase at the same time?
