1.

PARIS

First stop, Paris. It wouldn’t be a journey in scent without a trip to Diptyque’s homeland, and this limited edition candle from Le Grand Tour collection pays tribute to the street on which it all started for the quintessentially French perfumery. Famously home to literary and artistic icons in the early 19th and 20th centuries, St Germain’s creative and colourful history is channelled into the fragrance via notes of old books, myrrh, waxed wood and stone.

STOCKHOLM

An ultra-modern city with an ancient past, Stockholm’s pastel-toned façades and winding cobblestoned lanes hide many a forgotten secret, including the location at which Swedish Bitters was first brewed. Dating back to the 15th century, legend has it King Gustav II served the famous herbal tincture to Viking warriors to render them invincible. While Astier de Vilatte never pinned down the elixir’s exact place of origin, it did distil the inebriating blend of wild plants, aloe, clove, lavandin and myrrh into this intense, soul-stirring incense.

ISTANBUL

Lit with warm lamp light cast over shimmering rug-lined walls, the Turkish capital’s historic shisha garden cafés have been a customary meeting point for centuries. Diptyque’s Narguilé candle pays homage to an ancient tradition that still stands strong, recalling honeyed tobacco clouds with a slowly unravelling blend that is equally sweet, smoky and spiced.

MADURAÏ

Maduraï’s skyline is defined by the vividly multicoloured figures of Hindu gods that ornament the city’s 14 towers; a fitting backdrop for the ancient cultural capital’s infamous celebrations. A maison built around history and heritage, Cire Trudon characteristically harks back to India’s myths, legends and rituals – distilling the scent of sacred jasmine as it drifts up from temple floors, where flowers are left as offerings, braided into floral necklaces, and steeped in loose leaf tea.

KYOTO

With its balsamic blend of black peppercorn, bourbon vanilla, toasted sesame and sandalwood, Byredo’s Ambre Japonais scent sees you land at the centre of a pristine Japanese garden in autumn. Filling the space between rich and refreshing, this meditative fragrance carves out the journey of a crisp red leaf as it lands with intention on calm water, resting in a ripple.

BIG SUR

Their penchant for armchair travel makes D.S. & Durga’s founding duo masters at magicking up places through scent. This candle captures a rarity on the Californian coastal stretch; the only time that native scents of lush vegetation, mountainous terrain and pacific spray mingle – right after a rainstorm.

LANAI

Boy Smells holds the ticket to our final destination, and – phew! – it’s a tropical paradise. Juxtaposing the Hawaiian island’s volcanic terrain and magnificent tropical foliage, the brand’s interpretation of Lanai’s blissful landscape offsets the typical sweetness of coconut and orange blossom with a smoky edge of coal and cloves.
