Flower Power: How to Wear Florals

Encourage your style to blossom with these simple but effective ways to mix, match and elevate florals

By: George Elliot

If you're unsure how to wear florals throughout your outfits, you're not alone. In fact, because they're often busier and more vibrant than stripes, polka dots and checks, the prospect of mixing and matching multiple floral prints together is an artform many are unwilling to even attempt, just like wearing double denim or embracing maximalism. But what if we told you that Liberty has created a fashion cheat sheet, a practical and easy-to-follow guide that'll transform you into a pro stylist in no time at all? Here are four ways to make your sense of style bloom.

Match Them

Wearing a co-ord is your first shortcut towards print pairing perfection. Purposefully created to be worn together, with them the designer has done most of the styling legwork for you. The only input needed from your end is adding a third component into the mix, a block colour accessory or extra layer that'll add contrast and make your florals pop. Because you're looking to break up the co-ord, technically no colours are out of bounds here. If anything, the-bolder-the-better.

Clash Them

Coupling together floral prints that contrast but still harmonise might sound like an impossible oxymoron, but it can be done - as long as you follow two golden rules. Firstly, the patterned pieces in your outfit must share at least one shade, preferably two. This will tie them together. Next, know that opposites attract. In other words, compliment large-scale florals with those that are smaller and daintier and team ornate designs with those that are simpler and more minimal. The idea here is to have prints that purposefully clash and still have a sartorial focal point which all outfits need.

Accessorise Them

Pushing your florals quite literally into the next dimension will also level up your styling game, so add depth and definition to your outfit by wearing tactile, 3-D flowers. But before you pick up your sheers and head into the garden, we're not talking about the fresh kind; instead, accentuate your flowery prints with jewellery adorned with life-size blooms, a beaded headband, petal-shaped sunglasses and a raffia bag embroidered with flora and fauna.

Pare Them Back

If a bout of fashion paralysis has recently pushed you into a styling rut, mixing and matching a bouquet's worth of florals into one look might be too tall of an order, so in the meantime while you get back on track, might we suggest paring back anything botanical by adding in some minimal neutrals? The quickest way to make your outfit blossom and ensure it's you that's wearing the floral print and not the other way around, it's also a fool-proof way to wear any floral print, no matter how striking or intricate.
