How does the coveted Parisian “je ne sais quois” translate in 2025? Violette Serrat has some ideas…
By: Team Liberty
As the founder of the modern Parisian beauty maison, VIOLETTER_FR, Violette Serrat knows a thing or two about French girl beauty.
Oft coveted, oft imitated and thought of by many as the pinnacle of relaxed elegance, it’s a concept that has captivated beauty fans for generations. From Brigitte Bardot to Vanessa Paradis or Carla Bruni, all the way back to Marie Antoinette: French women certainly know their stuff.
So, who better to decode what French girl beauty means in 2025 than Violette Serrat? With VIOLETTE_FR’s playful, sophisticated and easy allure, she’s helping define the concept for the modern makeup afficionado. Here, she shares her thoughts on a beauty’s predilection for all things Parisian…
The beauty world has long been obsessed with the concept, but what does French girl beauty mean to you in 2025?
It’s about celebrating yourself—the version of you that exists right now—with love and gentleness. It’s about taking care of what Mother Nature gave you. Skincare always comes first, and colour is used to celebrate who we are—not to disguise us—for joy, not for correction. Nothing about us ever needs to be “fixed.”
Why do you think the world is still so obsessed with French beauty in 2025?
Maybe because people want to feel like themselves. There’s a desire for simplicity—fewer steps, fewer products, and more authenticity.
What do you think French beauty means in 2025—has it evolved?
It’s hard for a French person to answer that. But maybe it has become more inclusive and open, more global in its influences.
Where do you think modern French women seek their beauty inspiration now?
Still from French women first, of course! But also from Korea for that fresh, natural skin—and from the U.S. for technical tips and tricks.
What are the vital French pharmacy products you’d see in any French woman’s haul?
I think every mom is a fan of Biafine—a skin-healing emulsion. I never travel without it. It treats sunburn, small wounds, and more. I use it on myself and my kids. Not sure about everyone, but personally I also love La Rosée deodorant, Uriage thermal water face spray, and Diamant Original Red Formula Toothpaste.
What is the general mood when it comes to hair for French women in 2025?
Healthy and luscious—but natural. We’re not into glam hair. Think: do your hair… then mess it up. Sleep on it. Make love. Really live in it.
What is the best French beauty tip you’ve ever heard or shared?
Red lipstick is for you—not for anyone else. It’s your personal allure—a signature, not a signal.
What do you think is the ultimate French makeup signature? A red lip? And what product/technique would you recommend to recreate it?
A bold red lip will always be a classic—especially with a matte finish. I created Petal Bouche (a liquid lipstick) to make that classic French statement easy to achieve. I like to soften the edges slightly; it gives the lips a touch of volume and that imperfect, lived-in finish we love. There’s also the ‘bouche mordue’ technique—our signature just-kissed look. In France, we swipe on a bit of balm, blot, then press in colour with the fingertip. That’s exactly the idea behind Bisou Balm: one step to achieve that blurry, undone, effortless French lip.
