In Appreciation of: Olaplex’s No.3 Hair Perfector

The brand that changed haircare enters Liberty’s Beauty Hall of Fame

By: Laura Kennedy

The Synopsis

There’s a reverential hush as Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector, £28 enters the Liberty Beauty Hall of Fame. If you’ve ever coloured your hair in a salon, odds are you’ve heard of Olaplex, so it’s very hard to believe that this behemoth brand made its start in a humble Californian garage in 2014. The brand’s ingredient discovery (that’s Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate to those in the know) is found to repair damaged hair by rebuilding damaged bonds to improve hair strength. The brand has applied the technology to both in-salon and at-home treatments. The best part? It works for every hair type.

The Rise to Fame

Olaplex quickly became the go-to treatment at top salons for its ability to repair and protect severely damaged, regularly coloured hair. It’s particularly revolutionary for those who bleach or highlight hair regularly, rebuilding the damaged disulphide bonds in our hair that are broken during chemical processing, allowing colourists to get better results faster without damaging your hair. In practical terms, this can mean fewer colourist appointments to get to that perfect shade of blonde, and healthier hair at the end of the process.

The Credentials

Olaplex No.3 is an at-home follow-up treatment to the in-salon Olaplex steps 1 and 2, but can also be used alone. It contains the highest concentration of Olaplex’s patented repair molecule of any of the brand’s at-home products, so it’s truly game-changing for dry, brittle and over-processed lengths and ends. No.3 is loved by both colourists and those who colour their hair frequently as a reinforcing treatment that restores shine, structure and softness to the hair. Even better, the improvement to hair is permanent – it doesn’t just make hair look better, it actually visibly strengthens it.

The Star Quality

There’s nothing else quite like Olaplex No.3, but it’s best treated like a pre-shampoo mask – it’s not a conditioner, but a bond-builder. Apply the hair treatment to damp hair from scalp to ends and leave it to work its magic for ten minutes, then rinse it out before shampooing and conditioning as usual.
