The Synopsis
There's something rather satisfying about Good Chi Cleansing Balm, £30, the debut product from Muihood, the new beauty brand built on the foundations of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Buttery in texture and a joy to apply, it removes all traces of makeup, is the dream formula for facial massage, and leaves skin feeling incredibly nourished.
The Rise to Fame
Founded on the back of her own experience using Chinese herbs, with Muihood, founder Charlotte Yau hopes to translate the 5,000 year old medical system of TCM to a new generation. For the uninitiated, TCM offers a holistic approach to health, rooted in the idea that there is a natural flow of energy throughout the body which can be easily influenced by environmental factors such as climate and social conditions. How does that translate to skincare? By using some of the key herbs and botanicals found in TCM to create formulas that tend to health of the skin, remedying the somewhat negative effects of modern life.
Mui means ‘sister’ in Cantonese, which was a deliberate decision from founder Charlotte Yau who wanted to create not only a efficacious skincare brand but a supportive community of beauty lovers, too.
The Credentials
The plants and botanicals used in this cleanser (think: soybean oil, ginseng and goji berry) have been used for centuries for their purported rejuvenating, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
The Star Quality
Skin health is the aim of the Muihood game, and this cleanser works to improve just that by feeding skin plenty of replenishing essential fatty acids (found in the soybean) to support the all-important skin barrier, which helps keep the good stuff (i.e. moisture) in, and the bad stuff (i.e. pollution) out. What we love most, though, is the texture; it feels rich and nourishing but not weighty or greasy, meaning it's suitable for pretty much all skin types, including blemish-prone, and oily ones.
