Venture on a mythic odyssey with the all-new personal care brand, now moored exclusively in our Central Atrium

By: Shannon Peter

Personal care is often seen as the quiet, more sensible sister to the beauty realm; items with function, sure, but very little by way of finesse or form. Yet a new kind of personal care brand – now moored exclusively at Liberty – hopes to challenge the way we view such essentials, elevating the most perfunctory of daily tasks in the process. Climb aboard To My Ships, the brand offering an altogether more elegant alternative to the most functional of formulas.

The brand itself is quite literally poetic, inspired by ancient Greek poetry – or more specifically, Homer’s epic poem, the Iliad. “There’s a quiet power in language that’s been carried forward over centuries,” explains founder Daniel Bense, former Head of Commercial at Aesop and Managing Director of Sunspel. “Amongst the intensity of the Iliad, there are recurring moments that point to calm, order, and care. That felt like a compelling foundation for a personal care brand.”

From washing your hands to swiping on deodorant, To My Ships artfully romanticises the mundane. “We were drawn to the idea of preparation as both protection and ritual – something echoed in how the poem describes warriors dressing for battle and gods preparing to face one another,” Bense recalls. “That duality – strength and beauty, purpose and pleasure – felt especially relevant. It felt natural that a new kind of personal care could take its cue from something so enduring.”

Alongside hand and body wash loaded with (incredibly satisfying) exfoliating grains, as well as fragrance with a high quota of natural and naturally-derived ingredients, two deodorant formulas form the foundation of the brand line-up. It may not sound incredibly sexy, but underestimate its potential at your peril.

“Deodorant is intimate, essential, often overlooked and mostly uninspiring,” explains Bense. “The dark, smelly and mostly functional nature of the category made it compelling so we approached it with the same rigour and restraint as skincare or fine fragrance. Not to reinvent it, but to treat your underarms with the seriousness they deserve.” But this is no wishy washy natural deodorant that lasts little beyond lunchtime; it matches the tenacity of your drugstore alternative, yet completely raises the stakes in terms of ingredient selection and scent.

Speaking of scent, the current product collection is split across two hero fragrances, Of the Gods (which centres Polygonum) and Stand Up Bravely (which is built around a Marjoram note) – both of which smell divine yet never overbearing. “We favour clarity over complexity,” Bense continues. “Each scent is anchored by a central note, not for minimalism’s sake, but to create something legible and distinct.”

“Our fragrances are built with unusually high levels of natural and naturally derived ingredients, something increasingly rare in the world. Our noses are no longer used to that kind of simplicity, which is exactly what gives our range its quiet but recognisable signature. In a world of sensory overload, we wanted to offer something that lingers close to the skin, something that invites rather than imposes.”

The idea isn’t to solely turn something boring into something more beautiful; To My Ships is hopeful for a more conscious future for personal care. “For us, responsibility isn’t a claim, it’s a way of working,” Bense asserts. “From the very beginning, we looked at every element, from ingredients to packaging to how often the product is refilled and asked: does this need to exist, and if so, how can we make it as considered as possible?” Such considerations led to refillable aluminium packaging, a tighter supply chain and a slower pace of development. “It's not about being perfect, it’s about being deliberate.” Although perfection does feel pretty close...
