Being a chemical blonde has always been a commitment – colour care in-between salon visits requires next-level loyalty and a very specific routine. From straw-like strands and uneven tone to unruly roots, Liberty staff pose their problems to the beauty authority in our Ask a Liberty Expert line-up, Roy Clark – as he serves ritual upgrades and colour maintenance tips to see you to your next salon visit, and beyond...

The best way to boost nourishment is by introducing a hair mask and styling with a cream-based formula

What’s your advice for maintaining colour, concealing greys and root touch-ups between salon visits?

The colourists at Liberty’s resident salon Taylor Taylor London would advise using colour management products such as the Davines Heart of Glass range or wiig (over a box dye) to maintain your shade for as long as you need.

For concealing greys, muting roots and managing oily regrowth, Bumble and bumble. tinted Hair Powder will help tide you over. This multi-purpose dry formula is the ultimate beauty shortcut, functioning as a dry shampoo that cleanses, adds texture and corrects colour until your next wash.

Should I be using colour correcting products and if so, how often?

wiig is a saviour for blondes craving daily maintenance and care in-between salon visits. This three-in-one product not only neutralises unwanted yellow and brassy tones, but repairs hair from within using a bonding agent that helps prevent breakage while sealing the cuticles for protection. All this ensures cool, crisp, smooth blonde hair which looks and feels like silk, for effortless styling and brushability. It replaces your conditioner once a week or fortnight – leave on for a minimum of 3-5 minutes, or up to an hour to achieve an ice cool tone.

What can you recommend for combatting dryness, avoiding breakage and maintaining healthy-looking hair?

My top pick for masking while keeping it low key is a formula from the Davines Circle Chronicles line. Each playful pouch contains 2 applications, each Circle addressing a different concern – a great way to discover what works for you. Start with The Renaissance Circle to deeply nourish and repair, and after time level up to Coco & Eve’s cult Like a Virgin Hair Masque – the colourful pot will transport you weekly to a tropical paradise, while the Balinese raw virgin coconut and shea butter formula rapidly restores strands’ gloss and bonds.

After a daily treatment or if you’re tight on time, cream based styling and pre-styling products are your calling. Aveda’s Botanical Repair Strengthening Leave-In Treatment can be worked through mid-lengths and ends before you style. Not only does it aid the hair’s recovery with powerful plant extracts, it also offers heat protection against blow-drying and straightening. If you air-dry your hair, opt for LØRE Originals Define + Finish for added moisture, ensuring healthy looking locks with control and definition.

What tips can you offer for keeping split ends at bay?

Split ends are the worst – they’re caused where your hair shaft has been damaged, acting like a splinter. There are ways to avoid, disguise and manage them without a drastic cut, though:

1. Hydrate: Conditioner is your best friend – make it your focus. My favourite is Davines OI Hair Butter – the richest, most nourishing ten-minute treatment.

2. Deep Condition: Masks and leave-in treatments are key. LØRE Originals Legend Dry Hair Masks are intensely restorative and rebuild strands from within, promoting good hair health.

3. Don’t Pick: If you fall victim to split ends, leave them be. Hide them away and seal them up with a shine serum, like OUAI Rose Hair and Body Oil – it also smells divine!

Chemically coloured curly hair has a greater challenge ahead regarding its repair

As my colour grows out, my hair requires different care in different areas – the mid-lengths and ends are dry and fragile but my natural roots are oilier and undamaged. What would you advise for combination hair?

Just like combination skin, we need to divide and conquer. For mids and ends, use a thicker conditioner or mask such as Bumble and bumble. Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Mask to help nourish and restore hydration. Pair this with the brand’s award-winning primer if you need protection from UV and heat damage. For the new growth close to your scalp, look to a fluid shampoo that will cleanse but not saturate with hydration. Davines’ DEDE is the ultimate hair care staple – lather at your roots only, avoiding the mid-lengths and ends, which will be perfectly purified as you rinse.

What treatments can you recommend for chemically coloured curly hair, and how often should I use them? I need something that will help with colour damage while conditioning my curls without weighing them down.

Found in the tool belt of every professional colourist, OLAPLEX has become one of hair care’s best-loved brands, both in the salon and at home – regular use will help limit the damage inflicted by chemical colouring. Once or twice a week, prep your hair with OLAPLEX No.0, then follow with No.3. This pairing is a must-try as it helps mend the bonds within your hair, bringing it back to life. No.4 shampoo & No.5 conditioner work the brand’s magic into your daily ritual care ritual, whilst No.6 acts as a leave-in hydrating curl cream before air-drying or diffusing. No.7 is a final step that gives a glossy healthy glow – use the full line or incorporate elements into your existing routine to begin the transformation.
