The Best Treatments for a Hair Health Kick

If you’re going to spend the time and exert the energy on a hair treatment, it needs to make a noticeable difference. And with that, I can help

By: Shannon Peter

Like you, I’ve been on a lifelong search for the best hair treatment money can buy, and in my quest, I’ve tried the lot. But between the masks that render hair limp and lifeless, the oils that clump strands together and the treatments that do, well, nothing at all, there are a handful of gems that really work. Magical formulas that make split ends look a little less split, coat each strand in a layer of killer shine, strengthen the very fibre of the hair and make it feel a hell of a lot softer, no matter your hair type or texture. These are the best I’ve tried…

The Mega Mask

Hair by Sam McKnight Cool Girl Volumising Treatment Mask, £52

Take your tresses to new heights with Sam McKnight’s Cool Girl Volumising Treatment Mask. This enriching mask is loaded with a surplus of hair nutrients, including vegan squalane for hydration, shea butter and vitamin E to replenish natural oils, and Voluminis™ (a dual-action hair thickening and volumising active). In the long term, it helps improve the over-all strength and volume of your hair (excellent if you’re partial to a blow-out) but even after a single use, you’ll notice a visible difference in softness, weight and health.

The Multi-Talented Hair Oil

Larry King Hair Spoilt for Choice Hair Oil, £55

While I don’t like to exaggerate, there’s very little by way of hair transformation that this hair oil can’t do. I’ve been known to use it as a styler, running a few drops through my hair before blowdrying, and it’s great at nailing a slicked back bun. For days when I’m wearing my hair curly, it adds gloss and softness to my often wayward waves. But as a treatment? Massage into the roots and ends of the hair, and leave it there for a while to soothe and restore.

The Length-Reviver

Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Oil Invisible Oil Ultra Rich Mask, £38

Out of little more than pure laziness, I’ve recently grown my hair out so that it skims the top of my hips. But as much as I’m loving my new found length, the lack of trims is really starting to show. That was until I doused my hair in this mask. I’ve long been a fan of the shampoo and conditioner in this franchise, but the mask is like an extra intense version, using six oils, as well as skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid and Kalahari melon seed oil to add gloss and shine back to tired strands.

The Hair Hydrator

OUAI Medium Hair Conditioner, £28

Yes, you can use OUAI's cult formula like a regular conditioner, raking it through the lengths and ends post-shampoo. But it also doubles up as a hair mask, and this is where it does its best work, if you ask me. Made from an incredibly decadent blend of plant oils and butters, medium-density hair will slurp up its hydration, leading to softer, stronger silky strands. Ten minutes is plenty to reap the rewards, but if you have the time, leave it on all day and the effect is rather transformative.

The Scalp-Saver

Charlotte Mensah Manketti Hair Oil, £48

The way I use Charlotte Mensah’s hair oil is two fold: sometimes I use it as a split-end sealant, coating it on a bit like a mask, and allowing my depleted ends to soak up its nourishment. But I also like to use it to sort my scalp out when the summer sun or winter chill has zapped it of all moisture. I use the pipette to trickle it through my roots, massage it in and leave it there for a few hours before doing a double lather-rinse-repeat cycle with my shampoo.
