What to Wear to a Wedding

If you're gearing up for a summer filled with wedding after wedding, fear not: the Liberty wedding guest starter pack, curated by Head of Buying, Linli Teh, will help you figure out exactly what to wear.

You’d think we’d all have the What to Wear To A Wedding outfit nailed by now, wouldn’t you? Endless rescheduling, hopes for no more cancellations and an abandonment of restrictions has meant THIS is the year of the wedding! The two year hiatus has meant this year is busier than ever and we’re going all out which requires some serious outfit planning. Brushing up on my small talk wouldn’t go amiss either but, between you and me, I’m happy to let my clothes do the talking. So here it is, my advice on what to wear to a wedding...

A Bonus Layer

Liberty Fairytale Silk Satin Long Robe, £270

If it’s a church service followed by a party afterwards you want to make sure you’re decent for the formal event. The last thing you want to do is offend your best friend’s grandmother/ mother/ father by baring your shoulders in god's house so a light cover up will spare you the embarrassment early on and if not, it’ll save you from the chills at the end of the night. Light summer coats that are formal enough to wear to events but useful day-to-day don’t exist, I’ve looked! So why not try something a little unexpected? This Fairytale Silk Satin Long Robe, £270, is officially a robe but wear it over your dress and no one will think otherwise. Plus it’ll work perfectly for floating about on holiday/ at night times/ every summer party you’ve got planned. If you do plan to wear it closed I’d swap in a leather belt to avoid it looking too pyjama-y.

Not Just A Dress, THE Dress

Bernadette Jeanine Floral-Print Silk Slip Dress, £375

I find dresses easiest because it’s the whole outfit done. You don’t need to think about finding two things that go together and they take up much less room in your suitcase. I love a floral dress as much as the next person, but I tend to avoid these for weddings – you just never know how many of you will have the same idea, so I’m suggesting two options.

For The Minimalist:

This Bernadette Jeanine Floral-Print Silk Slip Dress, £375 (pictured) strikes the perfect balance between understated glamour without revealing too much and skims over your best bits without being restrictive. Shrug off your robe for the evening and you’re ready to go.

For The Maximalist:

The Evie dress, £335, from Rixo has many advantages. With a flowing skirt and frilly sleeves, it’ll move beautifully when you do. You could substitute a top and a skirt here for ultimate versatility, but the principle is the same. Comfort doesn’t need to be sacrificed for style.

A Statement Accessory

Kenneth Jay Lane Gold-Plated Chain Bracelet, £45

Now with such a minimal dress, accessories will play a key role here. The slightest glimmer from a gold chain nestling on your collar bone, the lustre of the pearls against your glowing skin and two chunky gold bracelets, like the Kenneth Jay Lane Gold-Plated Chain Bracelet (pictured), are just enough to make you subtly stand out. I like my bag to be large enough to hold a phone and a few make-up essentials, but no bigger. The last thing you want is to be carting a tote bag around with you all day. Something light, elegant and just big enough will be all you need. No one needs a big old leather sac ruining the photos. The Uniform Paper Cocoa Leather Shoulder Bag, £195, with its gold chain detailing will be just perfect.

A Memorable Scent

D.S. & Durga Italian Citrus Eau de Parfum, £148

Ah perfume - its going to be a long day and you need one that will go the distance. I’ve never met a perfume like a DS & Durga one. Long lingering scents that smell like nothing else and will have you smelling as fresh and sweet as when you stepped out your door. Italian Citrus, £148, is my fail safe. Fresh, ever so slightly floral with a smoky undertone you just can’t quite put your finger on, be prepared for people to ask you what you’re wearing all day long.

A Make-Shift Glow

Dr Sebagh Shimmering Body Oil, £55

Ok so this isn’t exactly a thing, but everyone looks better with a little glow, especially if you’re showing skin. This Shimmering Body Oil, £55, from Dr Sebagh lifts the dullest of complexions and can be used everywhere. Dab liberally onto your collarbones, shoulders, shins (yes shins!) and the tip of your nose or blend some into your body moisturiser for a light dusting of the good stuff.
