Keep Your Cool in these Hot Weather Outfits

Whether you’re heading on holiday or picnicking in the park, these hot weather heroes are perfect for when (or if) summer temperatures venture into double digits

By: Madeleine Killick

Summer is (finally) here: the beach holiday is booked, the barbeque is sizzling away and the redolent aroma of SPF lingers in the air. But with the arrival of warmer weather comes the daily debacle about what to wear, which is enough to induce anyone into a sweat regardless of the heat.

While there’s much to love about the sunniest season of the year, increasing temperatures can lead to an increase in panic as you ponder what to pull out from the wardrobe. How do you dress coolly for the commute? Which fabrics ward-off perspiration? Can you wear black in the blazing sun? Fret not, here’s all you’ll need to beat the heat…

Fresh Fabrics

When mercury rises and muggy weather ensues, make sure you’re wearing heatwave-proof fabrics that won’t leave you hot under the collar. Keep it easy, breezy and breathable in weightless, ventilating fabrics such as linen, cotton and paper-thin silks. For ultimate coolness, avoid layers and keep it lightweight and simple with single-item outfits (and by that, we mean dresses).

Spacious Silhouettes

As rules go: the warmer the weather, the slouchier the silhouette. Sweat is certainly not chic, so stay clear of anything clingy or too tight. This is where loose-fitting, large scale shapes are your best friend. Opt for oversized dresses, tunic tops and flowy A-line skirts that invite in welcome streams of cool air flow to your skin. Voluminous, sculptural and on-trend, dressing for comfort needn’t jeopardise your dress sense.

Top Of The Crops

When it comes to summer dressing: less is sometimes more. Look for pieces with short sleeves and shortened hems. As any Brit will testify, ‘summer’ weather can be erratic, so don’t forget to stock your wardrobe with an emergency mini-dress or two for those sporadic sunny days when the warm weather appears.

All White

Sure, black in summer can be sophisticated but, much to the disdain of minimalist dressers, darker shades absorb light, whereas white reflects sunlight, keeping you nice and cool. Classic and versatile, white can be mixed and matched with neutral tones. And, let’s be honest, nothing defines summer more than a crisp, white cotton sundress.

The Staple Shirt

Yes it’s summer, but in the UK: sunshine can be deceiving. Be prepared with a lightweight cover-up to whip out when the temperature fluctuates. Nothing beats a shirt: effortless and versatile enough for work or weekends off, you can layer it over a camisole, or pair one with linen culottes. If you’re eager to elevate your look with a pop of colour, look no further than Liberty’s extensive range of signature floral shirts.

Tailored Two-Pieces

Sophisticated, smart and on-trend, the tailored two-piece has fast become a summer favourite. Welcome a linen waistcoat to your wardrobe and pair it with billowing trousers or denim shorts. If you’re off to a wedding, swap your usual floral frock for a tailored two-piece tailored suit instead. Summer dressing shouldn’t be a chore, so take our advice and pack a silk shirt and shorts set away with you for those days there’s little else to do other than lounge by the pool.
