The cornerstone of every wardrobe and the foundation of (almost) every outfit, a good pair of jeans is nothing less than a modern day style necessity. But not just any pair will do. The best jeans are those that feel durable but wearable, smart but a little worn-in, classic but with an element of quirk. And thanks to a raft of forward-thinking brands – the kind found within the walls of Liberty – ticking all your denim boxes has never been easier. To help you navigate our edit of the best jeans brands for men, we asked Menswear Buyer (and resident denim expert) Laura Robertshaw to walk through the labels she loves.
One of the most exciting denim brands to come out of Sweden, Nudie Jeans is known for its strict sustainability credentials. “Nudie jeans are not designed to be used a few times and then thrown away,” confirms Robertshaw. “The brand cherishes the well-worn and encourages mending, offering a free repair service for all jeans no matter how old."
The buyer’s pick: “Steady Eddie in Deep Sea Blue is a perfect summer jean.”
Inspired by urban street, surf and skate culture, every pair of Edwin Jeans feels supremely modern. “It's is an authentic Japanese denim brand that prides itself on innovation and craftsmanship,” explains Robertshaw. "In the 1980s, Edwin invented the stone wash, revolutionising the entire denim industry.”
The buyer’s pick: “My favourite, along with most denim purists, would be Edwin's Regular Tapered Jeans.”
Acne Studios Jeans
Stockholm-based Acne Studios has put Scandi style on the world map. “Drawing on the denim roots the label found fame with, it's the go-to brand for quality, style and fit,” says Robertshaw.
The buyer’s pick: “The Max is my long-standing favourite for a slim-yet-straight fit, made from stretch-cotton denim saturated with colour, upholding the quality that has won the brand cult-like veneration from fans.”
“I admire Neuw's commitment to treading a lighter path and respecting all workers in their value chain,” explains Robertshaw. “They recognise their role in shaping a more sustainable and responsible future for the fashion industry"
The buyer’s pick: “The Lou, which was inspired by the style Lou Reed wore whilst recording The Velvet Underground's debut album in 1966.”
Founded in 2004 in Los Angeles, Paige has long-held its top-spot of the premium denim industry, known for form-fitting cuts and high-quality washes. “The best selling range of Paige jeans are cut from its signature transcend stretch denim,” says Robertshaw. “They fit like a second skin.”
The buyer’s pick: “I would choose these modern Federal Jeans in a rich black wash.”
