How Cece Fein Hughes Created Cece Jewellery

Inspired by the art of storytelling and crafting treasures to mark life’s most meaningful chapters, the designer invites Liberty into her creative mindset

By: George Elliot

Champions of the creative spirit, we've always spotlighted those who go above and beyond to deliver the unexpected – and now we’d like to help push them forward. Join us as we share the stories of the most courageous changemakers, experimental artisans and progressive innovators that make the Liberty community so extraordinary

Enchanted by mythology, legends and the mysticism of her home region, Dartmoor, art historian turned jeweller Cece Fein Hughes is a storyteller at heart. Reciting tales of fantasy and folklore, not with words, but with her signature enamelwork (inspired by her father’s old-school tattoos, no less), the pictorial treasures Hughes handcrafts under her namesake label are like talisman - waiting to be cherished for a lifetime. But before you go off to furnish a finger with one of her coveted signet rings yourself, or pick out a sentimental pendant to clasp around your neck, come with Liberty as we venture deeper into the whimsical world of Cece Jewellery, one question at a time…

THE MAKING OF CECE JEWELLERY

How Did You First Get into Jewellery Design?

I took a five day ring making course in my early 20s during a time of uncertainty when craving creativity, and completely fell in love.

Describe Your Brand in an Elevator Pitch…

Cece Jewellery focuses on ‘painting with jewellery’, inspired by old school sailor tattoos, folklore, and fairytales. We use an ancient technique called Champlevê enamel, skillfully painted onto a canvas of 18ct gold and diamonds. A luxury tattoo to tell a story!

When Are You at Your Most Creative?

My surroundings need to be just right for my creativity to flow. This usually consists of candles, music, and inspiring books such as Grimms Fairy Tales, or Pattern & Ornament by the V&A.

What’s Your Biggest Distraction?

The never-ending to-do lists of running a business!

What Advice Would You Give Someone Looking to Start Their Own Brand?

Lead with creativity and the rest will follow.

What Does Success Look Like to You?

Success to me is hearing the stories of how our jewellery has touched the lives of our customers, whether that be a pendant to remember a loving father, or a custom ring design to celebrate the birth of a new baby.

What Are Your Three Best Tips for Creativity?

1. Look to the past for inspiration.

2. Be patient; creativity doesn’t happen overnight.

3. Create a calming & peaceful surrounding.

Why Shift from Being an Art Historian to Working as a Jewellery Designer?

I shifted careers because I knew my heart didn’t lie in Auction Houses. I quickly became jealous of the artists, and craved creativity. Without meaning to, I stumbled upon jewellery making, and in time managed to combine my love of art and jewellery by creating miniature paintings, where instead of paint we use enamel, and instead of paper we use gold.

Why Are You Drawn to Myths and Legends?

I believe my love of mythology and folklore comes from Dartmoor where I grew up, a landscape reminiscent of the witchy and wild moorlands from Wuthering Heights. Storytelling comes from my fascination with the history of art, and how paintings can convey so much meaning. Jewellery becomes a part of a person's identity, so I believe it's the perfect medium for storytelling, and to bring all my inspirations together!

Tell Us Why You Love the Ancient Artform of Enamelling

Enamel provides endless opportunities when it comes to designing. You can paint all your dreams and desires in miniature, from kittens and pup portraits to turnips and hot air balloons (all custom designs we’ve created!). I fall in love with enamel more and more everyday.

How Important is Craftsmanship to Your Atelier?

The entire world of Cece Jewellery hinges on craftsmanship, so to say it’s integral is an understatement. We love that we’re championing and celebrating a dying art, and want to continue investing into the future!
