Hypernova 150: The Icons | Episode 2: The Swing Bag
Hand-crafted by 15 dedicated artisans, discover the precision engineering that lies behind this contemporary classic.
At the very beginning of the Liberty Hypernova 150 collection, artistic director Frida Giannini knew the bags she created would encapsulate its ethos: fusing old and new, contemporary design, masterful heritage craftsmanship and a forward-looking attitude.
With it’s sumptuous suede, precision detailing and hand-spun finishes, The Swing Bag, in particular, encapsulates the collection’s vibrant rebellious mood and unparalleled focus on craft: designed with Frida’s globally renowned accessories expertise.
Leatherwork Mastery
Finished by hand, each Swing Bag is made by skilled artisans specialising in the finest leatherwork techniques. Fusing heritage and modernity in each stitch, designs feature bespoke buckles, hidden pockets and reinforced metallic eyelets: details that ensure these icons will be treasured for a lifetime.
Based in the historic leatherworking region of Tuscany, Liberty partnered with Italian leatherwork masters, ALBA Pelletterie, for the creation of the Swing Bag. With expertise back dating to 1935, this family-owned company place artistry and practicality at the fore. Treating leather creations as architectural masterpieces, the team of master craftspeople worked with Liberty and Frida to craft the design for beauty and functionality in tandem.
Some 15 artisans work on the creation of each Swing Bag, carefully assembling its 70 pattern pieces using the finest leatherwork techniques, with the number of pattern pieces reflecting the detail behind the bag’s construction: each element tailored for longevity and finesse.
Precision Detailing
Behind the Swing Bag’s signature fluidity, rhythm and softness lies an intricately designed foundation: with each detail precisely engineered to ensure its elegance.
Throughout the development process, the internal structure of the bag was closely studied, to ensure the style’s characteristic softness, holding its graceful form with fluidity. The main body of the bag is constructed using the traditional edge binding techniques to protect the leather, while the bag’s flap is inserted by hand for a sculptural finish.
The signature fringe detailing is crafted with precise control, so each element falls naturally, maintaining rhythm and softness without adding weight or volume to the design. The fringes were developed bespoke to the Swing Bag, with a specialised device used to create a uniform drape, flow and movement throughout.
The Finishing Touches
Beyond the artistry hidden within the Swing Bag’s construction, it’s the finishing touches that truly ensure the Swing Bag is retains its timeless appeal. The stitching on the bag alternates between thick and fine threads, carefully calibrated to ensure visual harmony and evoking the precision leatherwork traditions behind its creation.
What’s more, the adjustable shoulder strap imbues the bag with enhanced versatility, featuring a bespoke buckle and metallic eyelets. These metallic details are mirrored in the collection’s signature Double L clasp, designed by Frida Giannini as a signifier of old and new combined.
