A centrepiece is crucial to setting the scene, creating a great atmosphere at a dinner party and helping to elevate your everyday dining experience – after all, you don’t need to be throwing a raucous affair for an excuse to set the table and truly make a meal of it. Above all you want your table styling to feel curated and cohesive so there are a few options to try based on both your table shape and personal style.

For a Round Table

With round tables, less is more. Now this doesn’t mean less drama, just fewer things on top with focus on one central ‘moment’. Look to large, statement vases that can be filled with a full bouquet of blooms, or opt for a large bowl filled with seasonal produce to add colour and charm without fussiness. A playful table runner will add texture and nods to a Cottagecore aesthetic.

For a Square Table

When planning to decorate a square dining table, we advise you to work to a triangular configuration for a dynamic vignette. Play with heights: a tall, thin vase beside a short, stout candle and a decorative plate or three candles of varying heights clustered together will add a new dimension and make your table more visually interesting. Place your home accessories on a decorative tray in the centre of the table to add personality to your table (and make it easier to reach the salt).

For a Rectangle Table

It might sound obvious, but go with the shape of the table with pieces running down the length of the table, not across the width. Of course, a large abundant floral display housed in a statement vase is the most traditional option and shouldn’t be overlooked when dressing a round table, but nothing brings atmosphere to a rectangle table quite like candlelight. For an evening soiree, a line-up of tapered candles placed in lovely holders sets the mood and creates a sense of intimacy.

Tips for Small Tables

Bear in mind though that a centrepiece on a small table is probably going to need to be moved when you eat, so ensure your arrangement is lightweight enough. For a quick and easy centre moment that sings of spring, look to incorporate some natural elements on your table with flowers picked from the garden dotted around in bud vases – there is nothing more cheering than the sight of daffodils.
