Meet the Designers Behind the Liberty Fabrics & Bridgerton Collaboration

Liberty’s design team walks us through the new arrivals and highlights within the season’s most-anticipated return.

Behind each exquisite detail and carefully considered Regency motif in the new Liberty Fabrics & Bridgerton collection, there lies months of research, design and creativity, painstakingly undertaken by Liberty Fabrics’ internal design teams.

As the highly anticipated fourth season of Netflix and Shondaland’s Bridgerton returns to our screens, so does the romantic, botanical collaborative fabrics collection, with new additions and reinterpretations of charming favourites for the discerning modern modistes.

Design manager for bespoke and licensing, Pere Bruach explains that the new chapter of the collection: “continues with dramatic and theatrical themes, adding some romance and elegance, celebrating Liberty's heritage with Bridgerton's Regency aesthetic”.

“Designs take cues from Regency style artworks found in the Liberty archive and from the timeless spirit of romantic charm shown through intricate floral renderings and decadent bouquets.”

Here, Pere and bespoke and licensing designer Emma Shortland share a behind the curtains glimpse into the creation of the new collection, and the storied behind some of the most enchanting designs to be found within.

Making a Debut

Emma: Blenheim Garden is a new design for this season. It has been hand-painted in the Liberty design studio, but it was inspired by a Liberty furnishing fabric from the 1980s. The design evokes the grandeur of stately homes and the fragrance of their terraced gardens, with bouquets of roses and a trellis creating a subtle geometric background.

Sophie Rose is another new design that exudes the romance of Regency gardens, a breathing moment in the collection that provides something more tranquil and a sense of space. It was originally created in 1978 and it has been reimagined for this collection.

Classics: Reimagined

Pere: We have incorporated three new colourways of Regency Trail on a tonal burned mocha, a deep navy, and a contrast pink colourway on this lovely light blue background.

We also have the wonderful floral composition, Bouquet Parade, which we have recoloured into a light background with softer purples, blues and golds, a second colourway features soft pinks and vibrant fuchsias, and finally, a lovely lavender and blue colourway appears on a whale blue ground.

Emma: Bow Bouquet has also been recoloured with these rich backgrounds. A dark blue background gives a sense of occasion and sophistication, whereas the additional colourway has a strong plum ground with playful tones on the florals.

Dazzling Additions

Emma: For this collection, we've also introduced a new process of screen-printed pigment layers on the Tana Lawn ground. The pigment is a silver metallic that floats over the design to give them an added dimension. We've developed on two patterns, one being Bow Bouquet and the other being Bouquet Parade, and we have spot and stripe motifs that go over both designs.

Pere: We have transferred some previous best-selling silk colourways onto our Tana Lawn cotton, including Bow Bouquet in a navy and aubergine background, and two lovely colourways of Bouquet Carnival in shades of pinks and blues. We're also bringing back Regency Trail on a teal and gold colourways.
