Informed by a childhood love of knitting and inspired by her love of travel and eclectic entertaining style, Los Angeles-based designer Heather Taylor launched her eponymous textile brand in 2013. Combining the ease of the Californian lifestyle with nostalgic patterns, each collection is designed in Los Angeles and handcrafted by artisans in Chiapas, Mexico. We spoke to Heather about the importance of functional beauty and how the art of hosting continues to fuel her enduring designs.

What inspired you to start your namesake brand?

I was always inspired by the storytelling element that came into play whenever I’d gather friends around a table. The tabletop is part of that narrative, and I wanted to mix my love for craftsmanship and artistry with it.

Can you tell us a bit about your background in textile design?

I’ve always loved the art of weaving and have been knitting for the last two decades. Textile design came naturally with it.

How would you describe your style?

Our patterns are timeless and nostalgic, mixed with the ease of the Californian lifestyle. Functionality and luxury aren’t two things that come hand-in-hand too often, but we’ve found that it’s an important part of our aesthetic and mission.

Tell us about your studio space in L.A.

Our studio space is above our shop, located in a historic 1930’s brick building in Westwood, Los Angeles. It’s historic charm is a natural inspiration and the perfect atmosphere for our linens. With open brick walls and a working fireplace, it feels incredibly cosy.

Our patterns are timeless and nostalgic, mixed with the ease of the Californian lifestyle.

What are your main sources of inspiration?

I’m always inspired by Martha Stewart Living and Ina Garten, as well as my mom’s collection of old books. Being a mom has also been a huge source of inspiration for me; it really shed light on the importance of functionality with beauty. I have a collection of vintage textiles I’ve found during my travels in a pre-covid world, which I constantly return to.

Can you talk us through your creative process?

After nailing down our intention, we start the process by pulling yarn colours. Our process is so trial-and-error, and while we really try to get it the first time, we’re constantly surprised by the samples we receive. Sometimes it’s something we never expected, and it ends up being a piece we love. We always try to find something in our main line that is a friend to another pattern.

How and where do you source your materials?

We use 100% cotton sourced from Chiapas, Mexico.

Tell us about the artisan community you work with in Mexico.

We have a really strong relationship with the 2nd generation family-owned weaving studio we work with in Chiapas. Our relationship is a true collaboration, and we continue to be inspired by the artistry of the weavers every day.

How does your brand philosophy reflect sustainable practice?

The forefront of sustainability for HTH is creating pieces that will last forever. Items you won’t need to throw away after one use. With their timeless patterns, our linens can be used for a lifetime.

What are your top tablescaping tips?

I’m a big fan of pattern mixing or mixing scales of patterns. While the linens have a lot to say, it’s nice to pair whatever you choose with simple, white plates. We’ve been loving using taper candles to elevate events.

Lastly, what’s next for Heather Taylor Home?

We’re always focused on making new products that can be easily incorporated into your home, so we’ll focus on expanding our product offering. We want to continue to be a place where our community can come and be inspired by the art of hosting.
