Uncover the stories of Liberty's creative community, as captured by the world-renowned photographer and now on show as part of the I Am. We Are. Liberty exhibition

As we reflect on 150 years leading in design, arts and culture, it’s only right that we also celebrate those who make Liberty exactly what it is: you, our creative community. And with the help of one long-time Liberty friend in particular – internationally renowned photographer, Uli Weber – we have managed just that.

Now open on the first floor of our East Atrium, Weber brings his signature artistry to Liberty with an exclusive new portrait series to commemorate this milestone moment.

Through a collection of portraits in his signature and inimitable style, Weber has captured the faces – and spirits – of the Liberty community, creatives handpicked by Weber himself. "There is nothing average about Liberty's community," he shares. "Through this project, I wanted to put a face to this creative spirit, capturing their sense of individuality." From philanthropists to athletes, actors to entrepreneurs, as well as the incredible in-house creative talent we’re proud to call our own, the series celebrates those who continue to shape Liberty’s living legacy – and each have a personal affinity with the brand.

Like so many, entrepreneur Marcia Jeffries, whose portrait sits proudly in the exhibition, will always remember her first trip to Liberty. “I was taken there as a special treat in 1997, and I remember being told to close my eyes as we walked through the doors. A fab treat.” For Bitti Kaushal, brand founder, “Liberty has always been a shopping refuge from the onslaught of the West End. I love that you can discover interesting designers found nowhere else, not just the usual suspects.”

To Yue Hu, our resident Product Designer who also appears in the portrait series, Liberty is where heritage and imagination meet. “I first encountered Liberty through the pages of art history. It appeared not just as a store, but as a landmark of the design movements that shaped the modern world,” she explains. “My own practice belongs to a time that could not have been imagined 150 years ago. Shaping Liberty’s digital presence in this era feels both humbling and extraordinary.”

Weber himself has a long-standing admiration for the Liberty movement. "I first discovered Liberty a long time ago. To me, it's both modern and timeless, one of the Great British institutions. A beautiful building where you'll discover special gifts you won't find in other places," he explains. "I've very rarely seen a company with so many talented and friendly people. Everyone is committed, putting 100% in to what they do, from the bottom to the top."

The exhibition runs as part of a wider programme of cultural events held throughout the year, curated in honour of our 150th Anniversary. It lives not only alongside I Am. We Are. Liberty, an immersive exhibition on our fourth floor which grants visitors a rare look inside our iconic archive, but also below The Patchwork Collective, a larger-than-life quilted house built from over 1,000 patches created by Liberty’s thriving craft community.

I Am. We Are. Liberty, The Patchwork Collective and A Portrait Series by Uli Weber are open now until 25th July 2025.
