Don’t let unkempt soles stop you from embracing sandal season. All you need is a bit of know-how to get winter-hardened feet back to display worthy. Before you call in the professionals, our resident foot care specialist Margaret Dabbs shares her tips, treatments and essential tools, helping you achieve an expert-led DIY pedicure.

1.

File

Home-pedicure amateur? Make rough skin and out-of-shape nails the first thing you address for better looking feet…

“File nails straight across so that they look professionally finished. A crystal nail file is simple to use, running the file back and forth in any direction; it lasts forever, it’s hygienic and helps to promote healthy growth of the nail and seals the nail tip.”

“Foot filing should always be done on dry skin – no exceptions. Wet skin masks areas to be treated, weakens tissues, makes skin more prone to infection, and the file won’t adhere as well, meaning skin isn’t removed effectively. Start under the foot beside the big toe and continue across the ball of the foot, concentrating on areas of thickness. Rub back and forth continuously and avoid lifting the file off the skin. Finish by filing the heels until hard skin and cracks are reduced and smooth.”

Soak

An extended soak is sometimes all it takes to revive overworked soles and eradicate stubborn issues…

“A refreshing soak delivers immediate relief to inflamed, aching, tired, irritated feet and ankles. Pure Feet Foot Soak is ideal for anyone who suffers from odour, sweating or hygiene issues. Anti- inflammatory and hydrating Buriti oil soothes dry, cracked, sore skin, while anti-fungal and anti-bacterial turmeric helps treat, protect and detox the skin. The Pure Feet range is also vegan friendly!”

Scrub

Use a good foot scrub alongside filing to get deep into every nook and visibly rejuvenate your skin…

“Don’t underestimate the benefit of a foot scrub to bring dull, dry skin back to life, and reach areas the file doesn’t touch. The Pure Feet Natural Foot Scrub contains powerful active botanicals and plant extracts, removing layers of dead, dry skin and callus while softening, brightening and rehydrating. Twice weekly, apply a small amount to damp feet and massage into the skin, paying attention to the heels and any areas of callus, and rinse with lukewarm water.”

Hydrate

The feet are our most long-suffering body part, so an intensive foot hydrator is a non-negotiable to soften tough soles…

“After foot filing and exfoliating, make sure you use dedicated foot products – body moisturisers won’t work as the skin on the feet is 12 times thicker than the rest of the body. Be sure to use a foot lotion every day to help keep hard skin at bay and to keep the skin soft.”

“The award-winning Intensive Hydrating Foot Lotion is the first product I ever created and still my favourite. It helps to reduce the build-up of hard, scaly, calloused skin, provides deep hydration and nourishment and instant relief from tired, aching feet. It also includes anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Apply a small amount of lotion all over the feet and massage into the skin and nails.”

Maintain

Troublesome as they may be, recurring foot problems don’t need to stand between you and a good pedicure …

“Effectively relieve symptoms of athlete’s foot, itchiness, foot odour, cracked, blistered and discoloured nails with our Fabulous Feet Foot Hygiene Cream. Expertly formulated to address all common foot hygiene complaints, it’s perfect for sports lovers or those prone to over-sweating feet. Use the spatula to remove a small amount of product and warm in the hands, spread all over the foot and between the toes, twice a week until symptoms are resolved.”
