COLLECTION
For the Imperial War Museum collection, the Liberty design studio partnered with the Imperial War Museum, art historian Ester Cohen, and Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, an Iranian-British dual citizen who was detained in Iran as part of a long-running dispute between Britain and Iran. The collection inspires to tell the stories of those who tackle the complexities of war and incarceration through art and creativity. The designers relied on Nazanin’s personal recollections of her time in prison, as well as the historians at the IWM to the personal, but often universal stories of those who have been affected by conflict. Combining Nazanin’s stories with elements from the Liberty archive as well as the IWM’s Collection, the Liberty design studio created three designs rich with detail and symbolism.
Visually representative of growth and transition, Stitch and Community feature a Tree of Life-style design. Created from a collection of archival Liberty artworks dating to 1915, botanical embroidery studies are arranged to a create a trompe-l’oeil effect. These artworks are layered over hand-written letters and motifs stitched into a blanket by prisoners of war. The design reflects a need to create and connect to others felt among individuals inflicted by war or incarceration.
Our Tana Lawn™ cotton is a fabric built by obsession, perfected into a modern masterpiece of production through a bespoke process that has evolved over a century. Printed in our own Liberty Printing Mill in northern Italy, Tana realises unmatchable fluidity with a silk-like touch, unique print quality and striking colour vibrancy. Machine washable and durable enough for daily wear, it is perfect for both simple separates and spectacular statement pieces.
