Editor's notes

This wall plate is No. 131 of Fornasetti’s kaleidoscopic variations of the face of the designer’s muse, opera soprano Lina Cavalieri.

Fornasetti’s decorative plate No. 131 features a simple and cheeky portrait, showing Cavalieri in a mosaic-style depiction. The plate channels the Italian house’s distinctive sense of surreal-tinged humour – a style pioneered by designer Piero Fornasetti, and proudly continued by his son Barnaba. Handcrafted from fine porcelain in Italy, this plate is a must-have for art and design enthusiasts. Hang it above your mantelpiece or in a hallway for an enigmatic addition to your living space, welcoming a sophisticated humour into your home to benefit your guests and family alike.

About

Fornasseti is a reliably mischievous player in Italy’s vibrant homeware and design scene. The brand grew out of artist Piero Fornasetti’s lifelong obsession with creating variations – about 500 of them – of the opera singer Lina Cavalieri’s face. He used this motif, alongside swords and suns, playful monkeys and butterflies, ancient architecture and sardine cans, to create his enchanting ceramic designs. Fornasetti, run by Piero’s son Barnaba, is known for making high quality work with a uniquely playful streak.
