Victoria Sponge Vintage Velvet
Victoria Sponge is a playful medley of abstract blooms, knotted foam bows and sponge flowers bursting with colour and movement. Each object has been hand crafted using everyday items such as washing-up sponges, foam tubes and dressmaker’s pins, translated into the fantastical and unexpected through different painting techniques. Photorealist gouache flowers sit alongside sponged stencil shapes, composed into classical ‘bouquets’ to form a large-scale design.
The design is expertly printed in Italy onto our Vintage Velvet – a beautiful heavyweight base enjoyed for its luxurious feel and vibrant colour. Originally devised as a furnishing fabric for upholstery and heavy drapery, Vintage Velvet can also be used for strikingly high-impact garment design – use it to create thick jackets or ultra-structured dresses.
“This energetic pattern is made up from surprising florals, flowers made from kitchen sponges and scourers in a tumbling clustered large-scale repeat. Gouache hand painting and softly sponged areas fly together through space, with a dash of icing sugar hand-splattered for a touch of irreverent magic.” – Shona Heath

Visionary set designer Shona Heath brings her fantastical touch to Liberty print, in a unique new collaboration created for the Liberty Fabrics Design Series. Inspired by Philip Ridley’s 1996 children’s book The Hooligan’s Shampoo, Heath constructed miniature sculptures in her studio from everyday corner shop objects – off-kilter scenes of rubber-band bows, flowers made from washing up sponges, and discarded banana skins were painted into beautiful artworks by the Liberty Fabrics team, appearing here in a parade of vibrant colours and textures.
