Editor's notes

This slab-built terracotta vase was created by ceramicist Rūta Bartkevičiūtė – one of the winners of #LibertyOpenCall 2018.

UK-based Lithuanian ceramic artist Rūta Bartkevičiūtė creates her one-of-a-kind pieces from terracotta, using an encrustation glazing technique to create their vivid motifs before firing at a low temperature to complete each one. She draws inspiration from a variety of sources, often paying subtle homage to themes from Lithuanian folk art and ancient Baltic symbols – for example, the Tree of Life, shown as a willow tree filled with stream-tailed creatures in this design. Fill the vase with vibrant blooms to complement Bartkevičiūtė’s optimistic, spring-like artistic approach.

“I channel my inspiration from nature, folk art, symbols and ancient cultures. I’m particularly inspired by things that I have loved since childhood: fairy tales and toys.” – Rūta Bartkevičiūtė

Please note: These pieces are treated with a food-safe glaze, but are not intended for day to day use due to their intricate handmade nature.

Ruta Bartkeviciute is a Lithuanian ceramic artist who has been based in the UK since 2010, and is one of the shortlisted winners of our 2018 #LibertyOpenCall. She is inspired by the fleeting forms and rhythms of the natural world, using motifs from international art, ancient cultures and the qualities of clay itself to form her vibrantly otherworldly designs. As Bartkeviciute herself explains, “I like to create small worlds” – each one is a microcosmic artwork.
