The Eighteenth Century: muslin, calico and silk -During the eighteenth century a revival of Chinoiserie was stimulated by European trading companies in the Far East. Known as the Age of Enlightenment, the 1740s onwards featured trends for floral bouquets, garlands and accurately drawn flowers. Printed cloths reflected a popular interest in botany as a result of new plants brought back to Britain from across the globe. French designs tended to produce a fantasy vision of the East and nature, whilst English prints were more 'naturalised'. The fabrics in this collection were inspired by designs created on muslin, calico and silk.

Editor's notes

Peony Pavillion was originally called 'Chinese Garden' and was chosen by fashion designer Anna Sui. This Liberty print is based on an archive design from 1974. Liberty has many Orientalist style designs, dating from between 1879 and the 1950s. Anna looked at eighteenth century European fantasy of China on heavy silks. In Britain the craze for Chinoiserie style and Oriental exotica emerged in the 1770s. The textile show at the Met 'The Interwoven Globe: The Worldwide Textile Trade' featured eighteenth century women’s dresses, men’s robes and painted portraits, Anna's inspiration derived from this exhibition and led to this final design selection from the Liberty Archive. The print was named after the title of the Ming Dynasty play by Tang Xianzu.

Anna Sui's world famous fashion collections take you on a creative journey, mixing vintage styles with current cultural obsessions – effortlessly creating hip and original clothes. Deeply interested in the background of everything she does, Anna was the perfect choice for a collection inspired by historical fashion eras.
