Introduce your kids to Wobbelyoga – a regenerated form of yoga that binds the benefits of the Wobbel board with the mental and physical aspects of standard yoga practice. We sat down with the founder Rianne Roodbeen to discuss how Wobbelyoga opens up a whole new world of yoga exercises, while enhancing self-confidence, mindfulness and body awareness.

What is a Wobbel board?

The Wobbel is a beautiful balance board which enhances body awareness in a playful way. It stimulates creativity, balance and strength. Alongside its development capabilities, the Wobbel is great because of its impressive, but undefined curved shape. It’s an open-end toy - an invitation for children of every age. The Wobbel is not only good for the little yogis, but also for the environment. The board is completely manufactured with natural materials and made with many layers of the best European beech wood. The Wobbel is also CE certified up to 200 kilograms, so both kids and adults can enjoy it!

And Wobbelyoga?

At the beginning of 2017, I saw the possibilities of combining yoga and the Wobbel board, so I started to develop Wobbelyoga. I taught the first lessons in Amsterdam in April 2017. Since then, Wobbelyoga has been shared with parents and children all over the world. Wobbelyoga opens up new physical possibilities and can create wonderful stories. Thanks to the movement of the Wobbel, the yoga poses become more challenging and the adventures even more fun. You will see that at the end of the lesson every child will step off their Wobbel relaxed with a big smile on their face.

How does the Wobbel board enhance standard yoga practice?

Wobbelyoga combines the best of yoga with all the possibilities offered by the Wobbel. The Wobbel brings us a fun and challenging way to work on strength, balance and concentration. The lessons help children to increase their body awareness and their self-confidence.

What are the physical and mental benefits of Wobbelyoga?

On the Wobbel every movement requires a constant adjustment of balance. It allows children to work on their gross motor skills, strength, coordination, and concentration. The rhythmic movements help to create calmness in the body and mind.

Do you have any advice for parents on how to nurture a child’s wellbeing?

My advice for everyone's well-being and for every age is to step outside, feel the wind, smell the flowers, play and feel free. I invite you to discover the world around you. Wonder, grow and enjoy. Take care of yourself, the world and each other and never forget, you are so loved!

What are your favourite things to do with your family?

We love to go to the beach and sail our little boat. Being on the water is one of our favourite things to do. We don’t have mountains in the Netherlands but that’s my favourite place to be. Being surrounded by nature, the fresh air, walking barefoot in green grass… it’s the best feeling!

Do you think more schools should include yoga as part of the curriculum?

That would be so wonderful and so valuable. In the Netherlands we see it more and more. I teach Wobbelyoga at schools every week. We see that the rhythmic movement brings calmness and focus. Yoga in the classroom does not have to take a lot of time. Just a few short yoga and mindfulness exercises every day can make a difference. A difference for the child, the group and the teacher. I was a primary school teacher for nine years before I started teaching children's yoga. Yoga in schools is a daily present for the children and teachers.
