Our #LibertyBeautyMatters series answers your burning questions on beauty and skincare. For this edition, Ammy Drammeh, the Spanish-born, London-based makeup artist behind our inspiring Living Colour shoot, shares her wisdom...
How important is skin preparation before makeup? It is essential. If skin is clean and hydrated, your makeup will look 10 times better, you won’t need as much product on your skin and it won’t be patchy or uneven. Cleanse skin – I love Eve Lom Cleanser – all the dirt has to go. Follow with toner, serum and daily moisturiser with SPF.Shop skincare
The holy grail of skin is a radiant complexion. What three products will help me achieve that?Start by using a primer after your daily skin routine, as it seals the skin’s surface. I recommend Laura Mercier Foundation Primer – it looks instantly fresh. NARS Sheer Glow Foundation is ideal to layer onto a primer. It’s lightweight and has great ingredients, including turmeric. Use a highlighter to finish the look: the best is Hourglass Vanish Flash Highlighting Stick.
How do you apply eye makeup so it stays put?The eyelid is naturally oily, so whatever makeup you put there will move. Remove oil by using an eyelid primer. Trish McEvoy Eye Base Essentials corrects the colour and makes the lid matte. It is essential kit. Apply with the tip of your finger and make sure it goes into all the creases.Shop eyes
How do I choose the perfect red lipstick?People get obsessed with this one! They think, “I’m a redhead, so I can’t go brown” or “I’m a blonde, so I can’t go bright”, but there are no rules. Try a colour you like the look of, and play with matte, glossy and sheer lipsticks. My personal favourite is NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl – I’ve used it for 10 years.Shop lips
What new thing can I try to break out of my makeup routine?Try the glossy-eyelid trend, it’s really easy and looks so modern. After applying your lid primer, take your tinted lip gloss or lipstick – I use Chantecaille Lip Sleek in Tango or a NARS Lip Gloss – and dab it on the centre of the eyelids for instant futuristic shine.
Brushes vs finger application – when are they needed, when not?I use my fingers for makeup application – a sponge or brush can absorb the product and fingers don’t! The two brushes we all need are a fluffy powder brush, and a tiny brush to use with precision on eyes or to subtly cover a blemish. I love Hourglass Powder Brush No 1 and Trish McEvoy 41 Precision Smudge Brush.
“It’s all about primer – yes – but also make sure you choose an oil-free moisturiser and foundation. Chantecaille Future Skin Foundation is oil-free but very hydrating”
Top makeup tip for a special occasion look that will last all day? It’s all about primer – yes – but also make sure you choose an oil-free moisturiser and foundation. I recommend Chantecaille Future Skin Foundation – it’s oil-free but very hydrating. If you’re using a mattifying powder, use it on the centre of the face only, otherwise you’ll lose the glow.
What is the perfect multipurpose colour to use for lips, cheeks and eyelids during the summer months?Coral is a fantastic shade. It suits every shade of skin – if you are tanned, it highlights; if you have a darker skin, you can layer and deepen the colour. It’s fresh and healthy. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t look good in it. Try NARS Audacious Lipstick in Lana.Shop Makeup
