Since its launch in 1991 with a simple line of essential lipsticks, Bobbi Brown has become one of the world’s most celebrated names in beauty, offering up an exhaustive line of cult cosmetics, essential skin care and pro makeup tools. As Pro Artists Amy Conway and Aimee Morrison travel the UK and Ireland to bring Bobbi Brown’s legendary tips and techniques to life, they share their makeup must-haves, skin care secrets and game-changing beauty hacks with us.
Aimee: The ultimate Bobbi Brown customer favourite is Smokey Eye Mascara – people return to buy it again and again. It delivers instant results – a single sweep is all that’s needed to instantly lift and curl lashes, while jet black pigment gives definition without the need to build. If you don’t have time in the morning for liner or shadow, just apply a few coats of this mascara for a subtle eye-defining effect. The gel-based formula means a light layer can be applied for day, then built up again for evening without clogging, clumping or smudging.
Amy: My personal favourite from the range is Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks, because it’s unique in that it gives skin a pretty pop of colour, as well as a different kind of glow that makes the skin look naturally healthy. With just a wash of colour and a well-groomed lash, you’ll achieve a pretty, feminine look that instantly lifts the rest of your features. Today, it’s more about keeping lashes looking natural to draw more attention to your features – owed to the power of the brow and better-informed usage of concealer.
“What drew me to Bobbi Brown 11 years ago was the makeup, but what’s kept me is the skin care.”
Unsung Skin Care
Amy: As a makeup expert, Bobbi developed the skin care range to complement and work seamlessly with makeup. We often teach clients how to get their skin looking the way they want without even having to touch makeup, because there are so many skin care products now that work wonders on bare skin. Our Confidence Stick absorbs oil before makeup is applied – it’s essentially like having a powder in the form of skin care. It’s not makeup at all, but it controls oil and delivers a perfected matte finish while also offering long-term skin care benefits.
Aimee: Extra Illuminating Moisture Balm has the opposite effect, giving skin that desirable dewy finish without having to rely on a highlighter. I use it as a primer, after moisturiser and before makeup, to give my skin a healthy glow that lasts all day – longevity is key for me! It’s also great for travel, particularly on a flight, when skin can become dry, dull and dehydrated – it not only offers an instant moisture boost, but it’s infused with illuminating pigments that impart natural radiance.
Amy: I’m obsessive about Extra Face Oil. So many people are apprehensive about trying oils on their face, but this one tackles dry as well as oily or blemish-prone skin because it’s a dry, fine oil – it’s not greasy on the skin. I used to have a lot of hormonal break-outs, but when I started using Extra Face Oil my spots disappeared straight away and I’ve never looked back! Now, if one or two blemishes appear, this oil is the one thing that eliminates them. Magically, it actually makes the complexion less oily by balancing skin with right amount of oil so it doesn’t feel it needs to produce more.
Amy: Tiredness and dryness under the eyes is something that people are often looking to combat. At Bobbi Brown we offer Creamy Corrector – the first in a two-step process for tackling under-eye darkness. You use two products, but you use less of each which, in turn, allows you to achieve flawless coverage without looking as if you’re wearing a lot of makeup. Makeup only ends up looking heavy and cakey when the wrong tone is applied to cancel-out darkness, because you end up applying more. The job of Creamy Corrector is to cut out the darkness straight away with just a tiny amount. You then apply a small amount of concealer on top to perfect skin tone and brighten the eyes.
The most popular way to apply makeup right now is to layer in the right areas in order to avoid the mask-like effect that all-over makeup gives. Start with Extra SPF 25 Tinted Moisturising Balm to even out skin tone, then step back from the mirror and question where you need coverage that day. Skin Foundation Stick is perfect for targeted coverage – it suits the driest skin as well as the oiliest. Coverage is rarely needed on the forehead or jawline, whereas most of us need a little bit on the cheeks, nose and chin – where redness tends to appear.
Using a brush to apply foundation is important. Not only is it the most hygenic method, but it also gets the most out of your product and delivers a flawless, dewy finish with buildable coverage. Use your fingers to pat and press, but never sweep – no matter how clean your hands are, the natural oils in your fingertips that will actually smear and remove product. Sponges are great for cream formulas and achieving a matte look, but they’ll soak up a lot of liquid product – use a sponge for finishing by gently blotting it over ready-applied foundation.
“Every single lip colour will give you two completely different finishes – one of which can be used for day, and the other for night.”
Amy: To speed up your morning makeup routine, choose a few select products that make a difference to your own skin and focus on those. For some, it’s blush, brows and mascara, while for others it’s a dusting of bronzer and slick of lip balm. We tend to focus more on covering the things we don’t like, rather than accentuating the things we do like – such as incredible brows, long lashes or high cheek bones. For me, it’s brows, concealer and Blush – these are three things that will open up my eyes without having to apply eye makeup. Concealer will instantly brighten the eye, a groomed brow will frame the eye, and blush, when applied high on the cheekbone, will instantly lift the complexion. If it doesn’t lift or brighten, don’t put it on!
Aimee: Multi-purpose products are a fail-safe time-saver. Shimmer Brick Compact is great for both cheeks and eyes – use the five shades individually as metallic eye shadows, then sweep a brush over the entire brick to achieve multidimensional cheekbone highlights. When you’ve got a bit more time on your hands for highlighting, consider what intensity you’d like to achieve. Liquids and balms, such as Glow Stick are best for dry skin types as they offers a hydrated glow, while for a party-ready look, Highlighting Powder gives a high shimmer that’s less natural, with more sparkle. You can even layer both formulas to tailor your look.
Amy: I often take my party season Luxe Lip Colour in a super-bold red shade, and wear it as a stain for day. Some of the prettiest pinks come from a sheerly-applied red lipstick, rather than buying an entirely new pink one. It blends beautifully and leaves you with a soft, natural-looking matte stain, which offers a gentle introduction for people that aren’t used to wearing lip colour. Always build from a lower intensity, and go slightly bolder than what you think you want.
Aimee: When it comes to redness in skin, even with concerns like acne or rosacea, people are usually looking for full coverage that still looks natural. ‘Natural’ doesn’t have to mean ‘no makeup’ – it’s an enhancement of your own skin, so it’s about choosing the right shades and tailoring coverage to suit each person. Skin Clarifier is a sell-out treatment from our Remedies range – it flies off the shelves because it’s a miracle-worker! Apply it morning and night to gradually clear congestion and reveal a healthy complexion.
