Editor's notes

This hard-carved, limited edition artwork Blood, sweat and tears of joy was created by British sculptor Alex Chinneck – one of the winners of #LibertyOpenCall 2018.

Blood, sweat and tears of joy is one of a run of just 25 limited edition artworks by Alex Chinneck. Chinneck’s work combines elements of craft and sculpture with a healthy dose of surrealism in order to elevate and examine the secret life of an ordinary household broom – the fluidly knotted structure of this typically inflexible domestic object appears almost like a trick of the eye, demanding closer inspection. Hand carved from ash wood in the South East of England over the course of ten days, each of these works has a surface that is grained with its own distinctive markings and colouration. A remarkable collector’s piece.

“I like to make everyday items appear extraordinary… In my world, where the normal rules associated with materials no longer apply, wood bends, brick curls, stone hovers and brick melts.” – Alex Chinneck

Please note: The natural and handmade nature of these pieces means that some variation in colour, form and grain is to be expected.

British sculptor Alex Chinneck is one of the shortlisted winners of our 2018 #LibertyOpenCall. A graduate of Chelsea College of Art and a trustee of the Royal British Society of Sculptors, his large-scale urban works explore the complex relationships that are continuously produced between people, places and things. Working within the context of a range of disciplines from theatre and architecture to engineering and fine art, Chinneck’s pieces have a distinctive sense of humour and form that transcends routine classification.
