Editor's notes

Each Katch Ceramics egg cup is crafted and painted by hand by Katch Skinner herself, working from her studio in West Yorkshire – one of the winners of #LibertyOpenCall 2018.

Enjoy your dippy egg and soldiers in the style they deserve with this delightful egg cup from Katch Ceramics. Katch draws inspiration from what she calls “the humour of the mundane” in order to create her earthenware home pieces, filling each one with a sense of vibrant personality. Designed as egg cups, they can also be used as a salt pots, mini plant holders, jewellery bowls, and more. Each one takes about a week to create, as it is first slip cast and carved and fettled, before being under-glazed and applied with sgraffito. It is bisque fired for two days in the kiln, then glazed, then finally re-fired – for a truly unique and distinctively handcrafted finish.

“I love the process of taking the wet clay and changing it to be something totally different from its original state. There is still an excitement for me every time I go to open the kiln. It’s a medium that keeps you on your toes and has an addictive alchemy.” – Katch Skinner

Please note: The handmade nature of these pieces means that some variation in colour and form is to be expected.

Katch Skinner is a ceramicist and maker based in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, and one of the shortlisted winners of our 2018 #LibertyOpenCall. She works with specialty design plaster moulds, using slips, engobes and lusters to craft her unique earthenware pieces. Along with decorative wares, Skinner creates one-off artworks for galleries and exhibitions, depicting extraordinary figures such as Claudia Jones and Beryl Burton. Her works share a sense of distinctive character and personality, expressed in an exuberant use of colour and form.
